At Home In Mitford 01 Mitford Series
by
Jan Karon
Leslie
, May 27, 2006
A humorous detailed look at the life of a minister in a small southern town. See into the personal life and ministry of a man that must deal with God and people on a daily 24/7 basis. You will meet many colorful and varied characters, and come to love each one and loathe a few troublemakers. Although this series deals with many weighty topics, it is bathed in a delightful uplifting humor that is rarely found in Christian fiction. A very few slang terms are used in this series, and maybe one or two inappropriate words for true "Christian" fiction, but it is easily dealt with. I have the entire set and could hardly wait as each book came on the market. Sadly the Mitford series is complete, but hey, now you can get them as a set or even used. (Look on the bright side) I would say this is currently my favorite series. I drank in each book and reread them too. If you start with At Home in Mitford you will be hooked.

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World Finding Intimacy with God in the Busyness of Life
by
Joanna Weaver
Leslie
, May 27, 2006
I especially appreciated her insight into the lives of these two women of the Bible. Her honesty and helps for living for God without stressing about "keeping score" was very helpful. She acknowledges that all of us go through different stages in our Christian growth and service, and that none of us should compare ourselves to the lives of others. I learned many things about my own service. I was encouraged by her comments on Mary's devotion and boldness to take the time to really "hear and listen" to Jesus when it would have been much easier to "keep busy doing". Don't miss this great book that I literally stumbled across. (ministry wife and mother)

The Excellent Wife: A Biblical Perspective
by
Martha Peace
Leslie
, May 27, 2006
The best book for the Christian wife. It is my top recommendation for married and engaged women. Martha is clear, thorough and backs up her topics with plenty of Scripture. She is right to the point, and sometimes her statements are "hard" to accept. It is not for the "satisfied like I am" wife, but one who is looking to be her best for God. You won't be disappointed. We even used this with its study guide as a women's weekly meeting book. It was a huge success. It is a life-changing message. (mom and ministry wife)

Aunt Janes Hero Portrait of a Christ Centered Home
by
Elizabeth Prentiss
Leslie
, May 27, 2006
An excellent book for a teen girl or boy, an engaged couple, a young married couple, new parents, and anyone else interested in living by godly principles. I love all Mrs. Prentiss books, but this one is in the top two. It emphasizes the importance of godly mentors and role models, seeking God's will in getting married, relying on God to meet your needs, and serving Him with what you have. There is also a great underlying principle of pleasing God with how you live. Although over 100 years old its lessons are quite practical for today. In fact many will be surprised how much they can relate to the young couple in this story. Leslie (mom and ministry wife)

Stepping Heavenward One Womans Journey to Godliness
by
Elizabeth Prentiss
Leslie
, May 27, 2006
Although an edited version of the original it is an excellent edition of my favorite book. Though over 100 years old it is still relevant for every young girl, young mother, wife, maturing woman, and Christian. I have given this book to nearly every ministry wife I have had in my home over the past 10 years. It is always number one on my recommended reading list. For anyone who is trying to live godly amidst the struggles of everyday trials and temptations it is a MUST READ. I have never read anything from Mrs. Prentiss that I didn't love. She is the author of the great Christian hymn "More Love to Thee, O Christ". This book could change your daily life. Leslie (mom and ministry wife)

Real-Life Homeschooling: The Stories of 21 Families Who Teach Their Children at Home
by
Rhonda Barfield
Leslie
, May 27, 2006
I borrowed this book from my public library and liked it so much that I purchased it from Powell books online. It is one that even my husband said he was interested in reading (high praise indeed!). I love how this book reviews families with so many different methods of learning. I especially liked the way each family is overviewed by number of children, age, geographic location, favorite and worst advice, and (my favorite) favorite resources and websites. Many different religious and non-religious backgrounds included. Highly recommend for people just in the investigative stage of homeschooling. -Leslie (mom of active preschooler, and ministry wife)

Creative Correction Extraordinary Ideas for Everyday Discipline
by
Lisa Whelchel
Leslie
, May 27, 2006
Lisa's writing style is so easy to read. I have read all her books. I especially loved this one and her homeschooling book. As the mother of 3 now teenage children, Lisa speaks candidly and openly about her struggles and creative ways to train and correct her children. I like the way she starts with reminding us all that none of us has perfect children, and we should not judge others. I appreciate her Christian perspective and unapologetic goals for character, moral and biblical training. Her "toolbox" sections are very practical. I highly recommend this as my favorite book on discipline. I am a minister's wife and frequently am asked for book recommendation on many topics. If you really care about how your children are growing up and what type of people you want them to become, this book is for you. Leslie - very active, social preschooler's mom

So You're Thinking about Homeschooling: Fifteen Families Show How You Can Do It!
by
Lisa Whelchel
Leslie
, May 27, 2006
This book is exactly what the title says...a great read for anyone thinking about homeschooling but overwhelmed with the seemingly unbearable weight of getting started. It was my first read on homeschooling. I was shocked by how many different approaches there are to this method of teaching your children. It alleviated many of my general fears, and helped me sort through the reasons why I truly wanted to do this. I specifically remember one mother's comment about not wishing to be the recipient of the "leftover" parts of her children's days. Lisa does a great job interviewing than a dozen families who detail their methods and reasons for keeping their children home. From this book I was able to read other resources that followed my personal philosophy. Book ending resources were very helpful. Size of this book is not too overwhelming to new families to homeschooling. I have enjoyed all Lisa Whelchel's other books, and I also get her person monthly email letter as an encouragement. As a Christian I also appreciate her seeing things in a biblical and moral context. -Leslie (preschooler's mom)
