Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

The Sweetness of Tears
by
Haji, Nafisa

This novel is sensitively written from different perspectives about the war in Iraq. The lesson to be learned is that the draw-down in troops is not the end. There are effects reverberating on both sides and into future generations. Now I will read Nafisa Haji's first, acclaimed novel.

This is a book that lifted me up during a very dark and lonely part of the year. It lives up to the praise from Terry Gross given in Father Boyle's interview on Fresh Air.

We all are looking for ways to manage or control stress, but we cannot keep it out of our modern lives. So, the key is learning how to recover quickly and completely from stress. This little book holds the key to recovering from stress. What seems like a simple tale for children holds a message that is valuable for adults. My life would have been so different if I had learned this process as a child. I hope to share it with my grandchildren.

Three Cups of Tea One Mans Mission to Promote Peace One School at a Time
by
Mortenson, Greg and Relin, David Oliver

I could not wait for my husband to finish reading "Three Cups of Tea" so I purchased my own copy. Now that I've finished it, I want to pass a copy on to my son and several friends. My husband's copy has already been mailed to his grandson. We're already planning to wait in line for tickets to hear Greg Mortenson in Sacramento in September. The word of mouth "buzz" about this book is justified. The incredibly inspirational story is well-researched and told through the voices of many people from both sides of the world. It is a joy to read.
