The Long Way Home: Chief Inspector Gamache 10
by
Louise Penny
twicelovedbooks
, September 08, 2014
Debuting at #1 on the NYT Bestseller List and #1 in the Canadian Globe and Mail! That speaks volumes for the 10th installment in the Gamache/Three Pines mysteries. Yet again, the entire spectrum of human emotions is displayed in a seemingly simple manner. But underneath, the depth and breadth of her characters, almost as mighty as the St. Lawrence River, weaves throughout the storyline. From the most creative dust jacket to the final page, an absolute delight. Thank you, Louise!

Day Hiking The San Juans & Gulf Islands National Parks Anacortes Victoria
by
Craig Romano
twicelovedbooks
, June 27, 2014
Just in time for summer vacations, yet equally valuable for fall and winter hiking, Craig Romano has done it again. Great detail, great trails -- this easily-packed guide will have you ready to romp over all the islands. Easy to use for planning yet equally valuable while en route and on the trail. We are fortunate Romano lives in the Pacific Northwest and obviously loves the areas he visits and about which he writes so well. Get the trekking poles ready and go!

Ten Billion
by
Stephen Emmott
twicelovedbooks
, May 24, 2014
The best book I have read this decade!! In fact, the best book already read 3 times from cover-to-cover so far!! If you want to plunk your head in the sand and ignore the warning signs, go ahead...but I'm glad I won't be around in 2050! Science facts and figures spell it out clearly. And Emmott does not hold back on either. Well thought out, clearly written, and specific in results and projections. Please buy and share this with those you love and care about.

Imperfect Harmony Finding Happiness Singing with Others
by
Stacy Horn
twicelovedbooks
, December 10, 2013
Have you ever read a book that made you want to sing? Stacy Horn's "Imperfect Harmony" may make you do just that. At the very least, you will be tempted to check out YouTube to look up some of these brilliantly shining songs she writes about so eloquently. Prepare to be completely lost in the music. If nothing else, check out 'O Magna Mysterium' by M. Laurisden....it make be the most profound six minutes you will spend listening to music. And it may inspire you to seek out a choir or choral group. Stacy Horn has researched choral singing through the ages and makes a strong case for us all to raise voices in song -- to worship, to praise, to lift ourselves beyond our worry and sorrow and to share gladness of heart.

How the Light Gets in: Chief Inspector Gamache 9
by
Louise Penny
twicelovedbooks
, September 19, 2013
Her best yet!! If debuting on the NY Times Bestseller List at #1 speaks volumes, so does this entry to the Three Pines legacy. Louise continues to get better and better in her story-telling with characters you'd love to have as friends. Her pacing, timing, suspense, and humor are mixed superbly. Read it you must but only after reading the entire series, in order.

Eyewitness Family Guide London
by
DK Publishing
twicelovedbooks
, February 21, 2013
A trip to London with kids or grandkids? It will be a piece of (tea)cake with this guide. Planning a trip will be a snap with all the detail about the sights, eats, & sleeps. Once there, the guide will be the best source of information for your entire visit -- throughout London and into the outlying environs. Even planning breaks from sight-seeing is easy with the "Blowing Off Steam" sections about each location. Everything is geared for family enjoyment for all ages. I only wish that all guidebooks had this much detail packed into them -- prices for all levels of your budget and info about things to check online before you go. Kudos to the DK Eyewitness Family Guides for making the focus family and making it fun!

My Berlin Kitchen A Love Story with Recipes
by
Luisa Weiss
twicelovedbooks
, February 14, 2013
Far more than another blog turned book, like 'Julie and Julia' (Julie Powell) or 'Orangette' (Molly Wizenberg) -- both delightful books. This is a love story to many extended families and all their recipes. It's also a travelogue of the places that Luisa Weiss loves. She makes the reader understand her loves...family, place, and glorious food. I started reading with an eye to compare to the other blog-books and found myself utterly transported to Paris, Berlin, Boston, LA. And I grabbed my shopping list to add the items I needed to make spaghetti sauce and baked beans and Depression Stew. Thanks for bringing us along for the entire ride of ups and downs and ups.

Whered You Go Bernadette
by
Maria Semple
twicelovedbooks
, February 05, 2013
Are you there, Bernadette? I certainly hope so... You’ve given me a rollicking, frolicking look at the Pacific Northwest that only another transplant could see and appreciate….and I LOVE it! You poke fun at the most sacrosanct subjects (Microsoft, parkas, coffee, coughing, and all) and because it’s you, Bernadette, we forgive you all your foibles and find ourselves laughing -- at ourselves and the other gnats out there. Then, a mystery folded into a mystery folded into another mystery.... Thank you, Maria Semple, for bringing Bernadette, Bee, and Elgie to life! I hope you have come to love the mountains and the water and maybe Bernadette will give us a chance to see more of our world through her giant-sunglass-covered eyes.

Moon Olympic Peninsula 1st Edition
by
Jeff Burlingame
twicelovedbooks
, January 18, 2013
As a long-time resident of the Olympic Peninsula (over 16 years), I strongly recommend Jeff Burlingame’s Moon Handbook guide to the Olympic Peninsula. The author gives detailed information about the entire peninsula on sightseeing, places to stay and eat and shop. (Sadly, some have closed since publication date, due to the economy.) Burlingame also includes sidebars, histories and little-known facts that add more interest to the experience. I was thoroughly impressed with the depth and scope of the guidebook. He reminded me why I love to call the Peninsula home by pointing out some treasured favorite spots and luring me to venture out to try some other places. I’d recommend this guidebook to anyone interested in the vast space I call home and to anyone who lives here who needs another push to explore our great wilderness. If you are interested in hiking on the Olympic Peninsula, I’d recommend 3 other books for you: Seabury Blair’s Day Hike! Olympic Peninsula, the best trails you can hike in a day and Erik Molvar’s Best Easy Day Hikes Olympic National Park or by the same author, Hiking Olympic National Park: a guide to the Park’s greatest hiking adventures.

Just My Type A Book about Fonts
by
Simon Garfield
twicelovedbooks
, January 08, 2013
You've just finished Robin Sloan's brilliant "Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore" and your curiousity is piqued by Gerritszoon, that singular typeface. Where to turn for research? Why, look no further than Simon Garfield's last word about Fonts and Typefaces, "Just My Type". Garfield's book will appeal to booklovers, word geeks, and designers in equal measure. It could be considered the nerds' answer to all things in print. But Simon Garfield's sense of humor wins the day and all those wonderful typefaces make their appearance. Is Gerritszoon present and accounted for? Better check.

You want quirky? You want an homage to books? You LOVE electronics? It's all here!! Of all the books I read in 2012, I have to place this one on a marble pedestal with LED spotlights....It's unique, vibrant, and whimsical -- it's suspense and fun and loving. It's a booklover's dream and a nightmare all rolled into one. Thank you, Robin Sloan, for creating the most unbelievable, yet very believable bookstore in fiction. And for choosing a glow-in-the-dark book jacket, too!

Growing a Farmer How I Learned to Live Off the Land
by
Kurt Timmermeister
twicelovedbooks
, December 19, 2012
Did you ever want to give up your day job, run off and live off the land -- as a farmer? Kurt Timmermeister did and lived to write about it. The revised title for this book should be: "Growing a Farmer: Don't Do it the Way I Did". The author's ability to point out his foibles and shortcomings endears himself to the reader. Yes, I agree with the other reviewer that Kurt should really look at the whys and wherefores more thoroughly before dismissing the project (beekeeping over-wintering, especially). However, he is probably more like Everyman, willing to take a different tack to reach another, yet similar end. I applaud him for pointing out the not-so-glamourous aspects to farming and the daily tasks, that evolve into monthly, yearly, and decades-long tasks. And I'd so love to sit down with a glass of cider and a wedge of Kurt's cheese to enjoy the fruits of his labor with Kurt. I'm thankful for farmers like him who are doing their utmost to steward the land.

Mr Penumbras 24 Hour Bookstore
by
Robin Sloan
twicelovedbooks
, November 28, 2012
I should have HATED this book! It broke all my personal rules for reading -- it's written in first person, male narrative and set in the present tense. All things I usually detest! And it is computer-nerdy-geeky -- Google, iPads, ebooks, oh my! BUT, it is about books -- all shapes and sizes, all colors and forms. Even the dust jacket is glow-in-the-dark. I LOVE Books and books about books! I've owned my own bookstore for the past 16 years. So, when a book about books comes into my hands, I have to read it. Not only did I try it, I savored and dawdled and re-read it! As a fast-paced mystery/book-based history, it was all FUN! (Well-written, too.) I even forgave its origins as a Kindle short story, turned into a Real Book. If you are a book fan, bibliophile, or book-a-holic, do yourself a great favor and visit Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore today -- you never know what awaits....

Following Atticus
by
Tom Ryan
twicelovedbooks
, March 07, 2012
"Following Atticus" is part hiking mountains memoir, part man and dog tale....all lyrical love story. Meet Tom & Atticus and you will never be the same again. Their true story of love and devotion, facing tremendous odds, is one to inspire and to cherish. It can be read on many levels and should be read and then, read again. As a bookseller myself, I am often asked to recommend books and for this one, I must sing its praises highly!

Chief Inspector Gamache Novel||||A Trick of the Light
by
Louise Penny
twicelovedbooks
, January 25, 2012
Detailed characterizations, intriguing plotlines, and complete sense of place give all of the Chief Inspector Gamache books their quality and value. This installment is written, according to the author, Louise Penny, as 'close to the bone' and the reader is soon shown the breadth and depth of the art world. Yes, there is a mystery to solve, but the focus of the books in this series is not murder and mayhem, as much as the human qualities and foibles that make us individuals and make Penny's characters shine.
