Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

I wish there was a rating higher than 5 on this site -- the book was that good. Beautiful writing and beautiful photos. I love this book!

Spirit Unbroken The Two Sides Of Love
by
Alice Garlock

Amazing story! This is the true story of Alice Garlock, co-written by her and her husband Rick. It's hard to believe that anyone could have survived the childhood that she did, and not become another statistic. You will love this book!

Spooky Little Girl
by
Laurie Notaro

Another awesome book from Laurie Notaro -- I loved the story, loved the characters. Lucy Fisher comes home from one last girls only vacation before her wedding only to find all of her belongings on the lawn of the house she shared with her fiance. From there her life, and her death, take on quite a journey. Loved "ghost school". If Laurie Notaro comes to your city for a reading, you MUST go see her.

Girl Who Fell from the Sky
by
Heidi Durrow

I highly recommend this book. I had the pleasure of seeing the author at Powell's (thank you Powell's!) and she was incredible. Heidi Durrow won the Bellwether Prize for Fiction because of the social issues of the book. But there is much more to the story. “The Girl Who Fell From the Sky” is a story of life, love, grief, survival, and learning about your past as well as your future.

Amazing book! This was a gift from a friend who loved the book so much that she didn't want to give her own copy away. I think this is possibly the only time that I was interrupted from my reading while on the MAX by someone who couldn't wait to tell me how much they loved the book. And thank you to Powell's for bringing Carlos Ruiz Zafon to Portland, he was amazing and made me appreciate the book even more.

Snowball's Chance
by
John Reed
Karen Iliff
, April 24, 2009
I love this book! I read Animal Farm when I was 14 and have wanted to read it again but haven't gotten around to it. Now it's a must after reading 'Snowball's Chance'. John Reed has an imagination like no other and his writing style is incredible. As I was reading, I found myself putting faces to the animals, not thinking of them as animals, and saying "ah-hah....", along with laughing in parts and feeling an incredible sadness in others. I recommend 'Snowball's Chance' to everyone, whether you're a fan of Orwell's 'Animal Farm' or not.

Titanic: Relative Fate
by
V. C. King
Karen Iliff
, November 22, 2008
I've ordered this book through Powells.com after learning that the author is donating the royalties of the sale of this book now through December 31, 2008 to Millvina Dean. Millvina is 96 years old and was an infant on the Titanic and was put on a lifeboat. She is the last surviving passenger aboard the Titanic and is selling her Titanic mementos in order to pay for her nursing home care. The author, V. C. King, is sending the money from the sale of this book along with a list of peoples names who want to wish Ms. Dean well. Please order this book online and help Millvina Dean pay for her nursing home stay. The book must be ordered online for the money to go to her.

Parkinsons Disease & The Art Of Moving
by
John Argue
Karen Iliff
, September 06, 2008
My father has recently been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and this book was recommended to him by the hospital where he received physical therapy. This book has been a great help to him and he can see where injuries in his past may have contributed to the disease. This makes me think that the exercises in the book, along with the information, may help all of us from the possible future effects of Parkinson's.
