Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Hunger Mountain: A Field Guide to Mind and Landscape
by
David Hinton
MBR
, March 05, 2015
Hunger Mountain is a small book (143 pages) filled with ancient wisdom. Through the use of Chinese characters, discussion of Chinese art and poetry, David Hinton allows us to see how deeply rooted Chinese culture is in nature. Hinton’s walks and writing from his Vermont mountain, Hunger Mountain, connect us to the cosmos as far back as the neolithic era. Through his writing of landscape, we begin a journey into our own inner landscape and we explore our connection to the cosmos as well.

Just Mercy
by
Bryan Stevenson
MBR
, January 19, 2015
Just Mercy is one of the most difficult and yet one of the most important books that I have ever read. The well written truth that Bryan Stevenson tells about our system of injustice in the United States is startling. As he weaves together stories of great despair, he also allows us to be touched by the lives of the people with whom he has worked so dedicatedly. He leaves us with a sense of hope but also the notion that there is a lot more work to be done and that we must be a part of it.
