Pale Demon Hollows 09
by

I have read all of the books in this series and have to admit I'd been disappointed with the last few books. So this was a nice surprise. While parts of the plot are predictable there are plenty of twists in this book. Also the main character, Rachel, seems more the like the witch we've all come to know and love. For those who have not read the series, I do recommend it. The last few books were not bad, but in this book Harrison seems back on point with the characters moving in a more interesting direction. This book left me wanting for the next installation in the series!

Night Myst Indigo Court 01

I enjoy this author's other series and this first book did not disappoint. I think she did a good job of developing the characters. I was worried, at first, that the dialogue would have the same 'banter' as her other books, but was pleasantly surprised. While her writing style is recognizable, the characters in this book were not reminiscent of those in her other books. I look forward to reading more!

Clan Daughter Queen Of The Orcs 02
by
Morgan Howell

, April 04, 2008
This book is the second in the trilogy, picking up where the first left off. Howell takes us deep into the world of the Orcs. Here we witness the strength of matriarchs within this strange society. Dar takes many risks to find her way in this world. Just when it seems she has found a place for herself, she must risk it all in order to save her new kin. I liked this book even better than the first!

No Humans Involved Women Otherworld 07
by
Kelley Armstrong
curlygurl
, April 01, 2008
Here is the latest in Kelley Armstrong's "Women of the Otherworld" series. As with the other books we follow one of Armstrong's "fringe" characters in her own adventure. Jaime Vegas is a necromancer, who has made a name for herself as a medium. She is on a job for a television special to raise the ghost of Marylin Monroe, when she stumbles onto a situation that she's never encountered before. She relies on the help of friends old and new help the helpless. Fans will be happy to see Jeremy Danvers finally come into her life and make his move. I recommend reading these books in order as characters and storylines from other books are often referenced.

Born on a Blue Day Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant
by
Daniel Tammet
curlygurl
, March 31, 2008
This book is the autobiography of Daniel Tammet, an autistic savant. Daniel's being a savant is enough on its own to make him a rarity, but add to it that he suffers from autism and its quite a remarkable story. While few people who suffer from autism will experience the independence and successful social relationships that Daniel has, his story is still an inspiration.

Darkling Otherworld 03
by
Yasmine Galenorn
curlygurl
, March 18, 2008
Darkling is the third in this series by Yasmine Galenorn. In the first two books we are introduced to the D'Artigo sisters who are half human/half fae. They have left their world to work "Earthside" for the Otherworld Intelligence Angency. In Witchling the oldest sister, Camille, introduces her family and we learn of the circumstances that brought them here. Changeling is the second book, told from the perspective of the middle sister, Delilah, who is a werecat. In this third book, Menolly, the third sister who happens to be a vampire tells her story. While each book has similar banter and wit, Galenorn does a pretty good job of giving each sister her own "voice." As with the other books, the sisters find themselves fighting an enemy that threatens the existence of human and non-human kind. An enjoyable adventure with plenty of "paranormal romance" thrown in.

Witch Fire
by
Anya Bast

, March 14, 2008
While described as "paranormal romance" I would categorize this as "paranormal erotica!" Not that I'm complaining. I really enjoyed this book. I liked the characters and found Bast's world of witches to be intriguing. There was enough going on that the "intimacy" didn't detract from it. I'll definitely be reading the rest of the series.

Dream Thief Drakon 01
by
Shana Abe
curlygurl
, March 10, 2008
This is the second book in the series by Shana Abe about the Drakon, a race of dragons who live as humans on the outskirts of society in 18th Century England. In the first book, we meet Rue, a seemingly powerless "halfling" who has fled from the Drakon in order to live independently among humans. In this story we follow the path of Lia, one of Rue's daughters. Like Rue, Lia is not fully accepted among her own kind. The have little expectations for her power and this prompts her to go on a quest to try help her people. Fans of this series will not be disappointed. Romance, adventure, and plenty of magic make this an enjoyable read.

Iron Kissed Mercy Thompson 03
by
Patricia Briggs

, March 04, 2008
Mercedes Thompson is one of those characters who stays with you long after you have finished the book. The loyalty between Mercy and her friends, the romantic tension of an inter-species love triangle, and the mysterious world of the fae...all come together in one exciting read. I recommend reading these books in order so you don't miss one juicy moment!

Alien Child
by
Mona Lee
curlygurl
, February 26, 2008
This is such a touching story, a plea for peace among men. Mona Lee suggests that outside influence is necessary if the human race is to ever unite across cultures. While hardly objective, her alien characters provide a different perspective from which to interpret the actions of humanity. Reading this book while so much of our world is in conflict made it clear that we still have so far to go.

Dead Witch Walking Rachel Morgan 01
by
Kim Harrison

This is the first in an ongoing series. I read many books in this genre and truly enjoy these characters. This book hooked me and I couldn't wait to read the next. The characters, their relationships, and abilities evolve with each book, which keeps the story-line interesting. If you enjoy vampire/were fiction or "paranormal romance" you should give this one a read!

Dancing Naked At The Edge Of Dawn
by
Kris Radish
curlygurl
, February 23, 2008
This was chosen by my book club and at first glance I categorized it as just another "chick lit" book. But Radish does a really good job of reeling you in so that you don't want to put it down. When Meg catches her husband cheating on her, it is the catalyst that forces her to reflect on her life and make needed changes. While this may sound a bit familiar, I really enjoyed how Meg's friends decided she should find herself. I liked Meg and her friends and wanted to be on the adventure with them. This book made me reflect on my own goals and think about where I want my life to go next.

Succubus Blues Georgina Kincaid 01
by
Richelle Mead
curlygurl
, February 22, 2008
Georgia Kincaid is another strong female character in another paranormal fantasy book, and yet... she's different. Being a succubus living among humans isn't easy, but Georgia tries her best. She even has a "normal" job in a bookstore. Richele Mead creates a pretty original version of otherworldly beings living within our world. It's kind of nice to have a protaganist who doesn't always take the moral high ground and occaisionally hangs with demons and angels. An enjoyable read that will leave you wanting more.

Once Upon A Spring Morn Faery 04
by
Dennis L Mckiernan
curlygurl
, February 21, 2008
Once Upon a Spring Morn is the fourth fantasy in a series by Dennis McKiernan. The series follows a set of four siblings who each dwell in a seasonal realm of faery. In each story one of the siblings is pursued by evil and must embark on a quest. Along the way they are assisted by the three fates who offer aid in exchange for answers to riddles. Each sibling also finds his or her true love. While somewhat formulaic, I think that fans of fairytales will enjoy the series. Dennis McKiernan does extensive research and bases each story on ancient tales. He explains the origins in each book. I recommend reading the books in order as each story makes references to previous books.

Queen of the Orcs: King's Property
by
Morgan Howell
curlygurl
, February 20, 2008
As fantasies go, this one is quite enjoyable. Dar is a tough girl from the Highlands who is no stranger to hard work. She has had a difficult life which becomes much worse when her family betrays her into the service of the king's army. An army where women are worked like animals and respected even less. Howell introduces us to the Orcs, viewed by humans as war-mongering, people-eating monsters. But Dar sees something else in them and this is what sets her apart. I found this story to be original and the characters memorable. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Water for Elephants
by
Sara Gruen
curlygurl
, February 18, 2008
What a ride! No trip to the circus could ever prepare you for the world Sara Gruen creates behind the scenes. I found myself going through a range of emotions - fear, anticipation, frustration, relief...with every chapter. The characters, both human and animal, are quite memorable. I'll never look at an elephant the same way again. Having Jacob Jankowski tell the story in flashbacks allows the reader to get to know him as this endearing old man who has led such an amazing life. It brings a sense of reality to the alien world of the circus. The conclusion of this book really left me with a good feeling inside.

Smoke Thief Drakon 01
by
Shana Abe
curlygurl
, February 17, 2008
I really liked the idea behind this book. Setting the story in England in the 1700's was a brilliant idea. The main character, Rue, already has a complicated life, a dragon living as human among humans. Then add to the mix that she is a woman in a time when women had so little independence and power...it makes her struggle to live on her own terms that much more compelling. Even with the mysticism of dragons this book reads like historical fiction with plenty of romance thrown into the mix. What an adventure!

Blood Bound Mercy Thompson 02
by
Patricia Briggs
curlygurl
, February 16, 2008
This is the second book in this series and I recommend reading them in order. I really like the main character, Mercy Thompson. In the first book, Briggs established Mercy as strong, loyal, and independent. Her life in this book becomes more complicated with the presence of previous and current love interests. But the romantic aspect of the plot doesn't overwhelm. There is plenty of action and this time, Briggs delves more into the "lives" of the vampires in the world she has created. If you liked Moon Called, then this book won't disappoint.

Into the Wild
by
Jon Krakauer
curlygurl
, February 15, 2008
I really enjoyed this book. I had heard of the story of Chris McCandless on a television news show some months ago, so I was a bit familiar with the story and interested to learn more. McCandless reminded me of people I have known in the past - young, invincible, and in search of...something. This book generated a lot of heated discussion, however, at my book club meeting. Some did not enjoy the bookat all and found McCandless to be irresponsible and selfish. This prompted not so many arguments, but instead, meaningful discussions and reflections on our own youthful adventures. I recommend this book because as a work of nonfiction, it prompted me to consider the limits of my own dreams.

Changeling Otherworld 02
by
Yasmine Galenorn
curlygurl
, February 14, 2008
This is the second book in a series about three sisters who are half faerie/half human. I enjoyed the second as much as the first. Galenorn does a good job of providing a different "voice" for the sister telling the story. She creates yet another variation on what would happen if otherworldly creatures were suddenly known to humans. These books definitely fit the category of "paranormal romance." If you enjoy the humor from authors like Kim Harrison, then you should check this out this series.
