Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter #1)
by
J.K. Rowling

I loved exploring the mystical world of Harry Potter. I felt scared, excited, and relieved for Harry and his friends all at different times. Rowling magically blended together everything that you want from a book in a captivating and compelling tale. This fantasy is extremely believable due to the fact that Hogwarts is like any other middle school; there always will be teachers you don't particularly enjoy (Professor Snape), rivalries between fellow students (Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy), tons of homework, and great friendships (Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger). This book is truly the work of a genius.

This is my choice of book to gift this year. It is a magically written novel. I care about every character, as well as the farm, the plants, the insects and how the woven stories resolve. I want to continue reading Barbara Kingsolver just to enjoy her words.

Matterhorn a Novel of the Vietnam War
by

5 isn't high enough... Who needs vampires when you can read about human beings in a war in the bush living in "hell". Vampires can't begin to compare with a story about humans killing each other during a war that didn't make sense. This powerful novel will get under your skin and stay there.

A Discovery of Witches: All Souls 1

I am loving this book right now. It is fun to read a book that combines witches and vampires with sophistication and history. It takes place on a college campus in a library. The characters are professors of history and science. It is fun and interesting and thoroughly addicting!

The Invisible Bridge
by
Orringer, Julie

, January 19, 2012
This book has stayed with me long after I finished it. I cared about the characters as I followed their lives, loves and challenges. I learned about history and traveled to remote areas of the world. I learned about architecture and medicine. I will recommend this book to my friends and their book clubs.

Invisible Bridge

This book stays with you long after you have finished reading it. You care about the characters and are reminded of history you had tried to forget. It makes the horrors of World War 2 real and focuses the reality of what humans lived through (or tragically didn't). It reinforces how lucky we are to be living in a different century than that and how important it is that we strive for a peaceful world.

State of Wonder
by
Patchett, Ann
bkwrm
, November 05, 2011
This book is beautifully written. It manages to combine love, mystery, joy, and hardship. It takes the reader on a voyage to the Amazon rainforest for a glimpse of native tribes. It brings up burning questions about motives of businessmen and scientists in the world of drug developement. It leaves readers questioning whether money is spent developing drugs that we need in the world, or just drugs that wealthy people think they want.

This book has me in tears. I can't put it down. I have lived and studied in France and I grew up in a Jewish home, yet I didn't know about this heartwrenching event in French history. I am recommending this book to my friends and family!

Loving Frank
by

This book is a wonderful glimpse into the life of Frank Lloyd Wright and his lover. Hard to believe they lived so long ago and dealt with issues still relevant today! The ending is horrifying especially since that part as well as the rest of the book is based on true events in their lives.

The best way to "read" this book is to listen to it! The sound recording is Fabulous! Each actress reading is authentic to the way the character would have sounded. I highly recommend enjoying this book on CD!

Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake

This book came highly recommended so I was disappointed. It was a good premise but I didn't understand the ending. The ending did not work for me. It just left me confused because it doesn't seem remotely realistic. The writing was ok but not great literature. Still it is an easy read and has a wonderful, creative premise.

My three kids are begging me to keep reading. I have to buy the other Rootabaga books now because we finished this book last night. They love it! They are laughing and giggling as I read and they are reading the stories again to themselves! A great, hopefully not forgotten book!

These authors signed books and had a reading I took my kids to. They were Fantastic!! They had the kids make up a story of their own. They spoke about their writing process. They got the kids excited to read this book as well as imagine writing their own stories. I give huge thumbs up both to their book and their help inspiring kids to read and write!

Lady & The Unicorn
by
Tracy Chevalier
bkwrm
, September 19, 2010
Today's daily dose reminded me of this book. Tracy Chevalier writes historical fiction beautifully. She weaves an unforgettable, endearing and touching love story. She also draws us into a time in history and teaches us the process that went into weaving the tapestry we see in museums today. I have a new appreciation for the tapestries and the lives of those that wove them.

The Glass Castle: A Memoir
by
Jeannette Walls
bkwrm
, August 26, 2010
This book should be heartwrenchingly sad but Walls writes it in such a way that you are actually laughing while you are reading about her unimaginably horrible childhood. You come away appreciating your life and also realizing that people are resilient. Jeannette Walls proves that you can overcome truly horrific childhoods. It is a wonderfully written memoir.

I laughed all the way through this book. It felt good to laugh. The characters are hilarious and the love affair is worth the read. The mystery is light and a humorous poke at politicians, money and power. I recommend this book as an endearing light read.

Thousand Splendid Suns
by
Khaled Hosseini

I was told to skip this book. I am glad I didn't listen. I had tears streaming down my face as I finished reading the book. I love to get insight into another country and it's rich history while at the same time being in the personal world of people living their lives amidst the turmoil. The characters are real and their lives are endlessly painful but it is an absorbing and worthwhile read.
