Bohnanza Game

The most fun you can have planting beans! Yep, that's right. It's a game where you're a bean farmer and trying to grow and sell your crop of beans for the most money/points. One of the most unique aspects to the game is that you can't rearrange the cards in your hand. You have to play them in the same order that they were dealt out to you and you add new cards to the back of the line - I mean, your hand - as the game continues. This forces you to consider how many beans there are in the deck (each card tells you how many there are) and strategize if you want to plant them in one of your three bean fields or sell them. You also get to trade with other players to help you with your harvest. Really a lot of fun with fun illustrations of all the different types of beans.

Anomia Game

Absolutely on of the funnest (yes, that's pretty much an accepted word now) and funniest party games I've played in a long time. Players take turn quickly turning over cards with different subjects on them (such as Bagel Flavors and Super Models) and a symbol such as a circle, triangle, etc. As soon as two cards with the same symbol hit the table, the two players have to be the first one to shout out an example of what's on the subject of the OTHER player's card. It's hilariously stressful and one of my favorite card games.

If you're a fan of the show Adventure Time then you'll love this version of the popular card game, Fluxx! The artwork by Ian McGinty (who has illustrated Adventure Time comic books, along with many others) is fantastic and all of your favorite characters are included. Plus, with the crazy way the rules and goals change constantly, it really seems to fit the wacky nature of the show. Plus, there are new Surprise cards in this version of the game that are a lot of fun.

Munchkin Legends Game
by
heyheyjk
, January 19, 2015
So, there are a lot of different versions of Munchkin out there. What started as a card-based spoof of Dungeons and Dragons has turned into an empire. While you can find a version of Munchkin for people who are intersted in zombies or pirates or science fiction - and more - Munchkin Legends is one of my favorites. Instead of spoofing D&D, this version of Munchkin takes on the pantheon of mythical characters and creatures for a really fun take on the original game. The core them is the same: you're trying to get to level 10 by battling monsters - which get you a level - while simultaneously sabotaging your fellow players. But, sometimes you need their help in a battle and then, even if you think they've won, another player that you may, or may not, have backstabbed in the past could suddenly resurrect the slain foe and you'll lose after all! This is definitely not a game for people who don't like competition and being attacked by other players but, if you're up for it, it's great fun. By adding either - or both - of the expansions you can add to the fun with new items to use or wear and new monsters to battle.

Hanabi Game

R&R Games

Okay, if you want to really put your brain to good use and have fun at the same time, this might be the game for you. You and the other players are fireworks experts who have mixed up the fireworks for a big show and need to get them back into order. You have a deck of cards with five colors of fireworks and the cards are numbered 1 - 5. The trick is to get the cards stacked up by color in numerical order from lowest to highest. BUT, the trick is, you can't look at your own cards! Every player has a hand of five cards that they turn out so that only the other players can see them and on your turn those players have to give you hints about what cards in your hand are either a certain color or a certain number. You have to remember what's what and try to play the right card in the right stack in the right order. Too many mistakes and everything blows up! At the end of the game, you count up the total score based on what cards were played correctly and see if your fireworks display was a hit or a dud. So, there's no real loss or victory, but it's great fun and the game comes in a small box that you can carry with you almost anywhere to play while you wait at a restaurant or at a bar, etc.

Fluxx Regular Show Game
by
Looney Labs
heyheyjk
, January 19, 2015
Fluxx is one of my favorite card games I've ever played and there are multiple versions that can appeal to a big group of people, whether you're into zombies, pirates, science fiction, Monty Python and more. This is one of the first Fluxx games to be granted a license to use characters from an actual TV show and if you're a fan of Regular Show, you'll really love this (there is also another Cartoon Network version that mixes characters from different CN shows). Basically, you start with a rule of draw one card and play one card. But, as the game goes on, people play new rules cards that completely change the rules and you also play different goal cards that change which cards you need in front of you to win; hence the name Fluxx. With the ever-changing rules and goals, games can be over in as little as five minutes or take up to 30. Lots of fun, no matter which version you get.

Ticket to Ride Europe Game

Days of Wonder

The second release in the fantastic Ticket to Ride franchise, this is often considered to be the best of the bunch. In addition to adding a new continent to travel on, this version adds tunnels and ferries to the game which each have their own unique strategy. Plus, there are also stations that you can build to let you claim routes by other players as your own color to help you complete routes you need for your destination tickets. A truly great family board game and a modern classic.

Biblios Game

You would be so wrong if you thought that a game about competing monks trying to build the biggest libraries at their abbeys was boring, because it's really fun. The game has two phases. First if the gifting phase where you turn over cards one at a time from the draw pile and have to decide which card you want to keep, which card you want to offer up for auction (in the next phase) and which cards you want to leave for the other players BUT you have to decide which action you want to take before you choose the next card. Then, once all the cards in the draw pile are gone, you move to the auction phase where all the cards that were put up for auction are now bid on by the players/monks using the cards that they kept during the first phase. All the while, there are six dice representing the six different categories of cards and you can use church cards to turn the faces of certain dice to a higher or lower number to try and up your score or lower your opponents. At the end of the game, everyone counts the number of cards they have in each category and whoever has the most gets the number of points that are shown on the dice. Very different theme and mechanic than many other games out there and lots of fun.

Loonacy Maniacal Matching Game

Very fun game for families or groups of kids (or inebriated adults, for that matter) where every player goes at the same time to match cards in multiple stacks. If it gets to the point where no one has a match, everyone draws a card face down and then simultaneously looks at them to see if there is a match. Fast and frantic and fun!

Braverats
by
Blue Orange Games

, November 18, 2014
Okay, this may be the fastest card game ever. This is a rebranding of a Japanese card came called "R" which was created by Seiji Kanai, who created the incredibly popular games "Love Letter" and "Lost Legacy". Like those games, "Braverats" has only 16 cards and is a variation on the classic card game "War" where two different clans of Scottish rats ... yes, rats (who are depicted with fantastic artwork and wearing kilts where appropriate)battle each other on each turn. But, as opposed to "War", the higher number card doesn't always win since each card has a special power that can turn the tables or alter the outcome. First player to win four rounds wins and that can happen in about one minute but no more than five, most of the time. The rule book also has a lot of variations so you can mix up the rules for different ways to play. Unlike "Love Letter", this is for two players ONLY (just like "War") and comes in a great, small tin case that is easy to always have with you.

Age of War Game
by
Reiner Knizia and Fantasy Flight Games
heyheyjk
, November 18, 2014
Age of War is a really fun game where you play a Daimyo in feudal Japan who is trying to capture different castles. There are fourteen castle cards and each one has "battle lines) with combinations of certain dice symbols that you must roll to capture that card. Each time you roll and fill one line of the symbols you get to roll the remaining dice again. If you fail to fill a battle line, you set one die aside and roll the rest and keep doing so until you either capture the castle or lose the battle. The cards have different colors that correspond to different clans and each clan has 1 - 4 different castles. You get bonus points if you capture all the castles for one particular clan and you can steal castles from other players to help you get all of the cards for one clan/color. Once you capture all of the castles for one clan you get extra bonus points and they can no longer be stolen. The game is really inexpensive and is part of the new microgame craze going on right now with games such as Love Letter. Once you open the box, the entire game fits inside one of the small ziploc plastic bags that is inside at a fraction of the size of what is already a pretty small package. It's is a great game and so easy to carry around with you almost everywhere you go.

Splendor Game

Asmodee Games

, October 21, 2014
This is a great game that just came out in Spring of 2014 and was a runner-up for the prestigious Spiel des Jahres awards. The thing that will impress you immediately is how beautiful the artwork is on the cards. Then, there are six sets of chips (like really nice heavy weight poker chips) that represent different gems: diamonds, rubies, sapphires, onyx and emeralds, along with gold which are used as "wild cards/chips". On your turn you either take chips to add to your account or buy a development card with those chips. The cards are arranged in three rows: the bottom row cards represent mines that produce the gems and once you buy a card, you have that gem to combine with chips for future purchases. The middle row have artwork showing modes of transportation (to transport your gems) or artisans (that are making things with your gems). Then, the top row are the most expensive cards and show views of cities. As soon as someone buys a card it is immediately replaced so that are always four cards in each row to choose from. The reason to buy cards is to get prestige points and the first person to reach 15 points wins. Each card has the cost to purchase it in the bottom left corner which will always be a combination of chips, i.e. one ruby, one diamond, one sapphire or maybe three emeralds. Then, mostly starting with the second row of cards, there will be a large number in the top left corner which are the prestige points for that card. So, your strategy is to buy the cards that get you the most points. There are also "noble" cards with portraits of people who watch the game and then will "visit" you if you have the right combination of gem cards shown on their card and those are worth 3 addtional points. At any point, you can also "reserve" a card by taking it off the table along with one gold chip. You can do this to either try to buy it later in the game when you have enough gems or to keep another player from getting it. There is no penalty if you don't buy the card later. You can only have three of these reserve cards at any time and you can also never have more than ten of the gem chips. It's a pretty fast game once you get used to it and I'm probably making it sound much more complicated than it is. Fantastic components and a really great game.

King of Tokyo Game DISCONTINUED
by
heyheyjk
, October 18, 2014
This game is a lot of fun and a great family game. In fact, it was just voted #2 in a poll of the top 100 games of all time on the Dice Tower website. Plays with 2-6 players and everyone is playing as a giant monster (kaiju) in the vein of Godzilla (known in this game as Gigazaur) and King Kong (The King) who are all fighting over the city of Tokyo. On your turn you have six dice that you roll and re-roll up to three times (just like in Yahtzee) that allow you to either attack other monsters, heal damage done to you in attacks, get energy cubes that you use to buy extra powers for your kaiju, or get victory points. As the game progresses you try to get to either 20 victory points or be the last monster standing when all the other monsters life points go down from 10 to 0. There is also one expansion (called Power Up!) that adds a new Panda character and new cards called Evolutions that help your kaiju during the game and there is a fun Halloween expansion that gives you two new Halloween themed characters (with Evolution cards) and a special set of orange dice. The Halloween expansion also comes with one promo card for the new King of New York game that comes out at the end of October 2014. KoNY will be basically the same but adds a little more complexity but all early reviews of it are great.

Zombie Dice Game
by
Steve Jackson Games
heyheyjk
, October 13, 2014
This is my absolute favorite carry-around game and everyone I've ever played with falls in love with it, too (especially in these "Walking Dead" zombie prevalent times). The cup holds 13 dice, each with various combinations of brains, feet and shotgun blast symbols. It's a "push your luck" game where on your turn you are a zombie and you "chase" three humans, which are the dice. The goal on each turn is to collect as many brains as you can before you get shot three times. Once you get three shotgun blasts you're a dead zombie and you lose any brains you have collected on that turn. So, on your turn you roll three dice. If you get a brain it means you caught that human and ate his brain and you put those dice off to one side. If you roll a shotgun blast it means that human shot you and you put those dice off to the other side. Any feet you roll means that that human got away so you hang on to those dice and add as many more dice from the cup so that you always roll three dice on your turn. Keep rolling until you want to stop so as not to risk rolling a third shotgun blast and keep track of how many brains you got that turn. The first zombie to roll/eat thirteen brains wins. There is some minor strategy in that the symbols on the dice come in three colors. Green dice have more brains, yellow dice has two of each symbol and red dice have one more shotgun blast. There are also two expansions which are really fun, especially the new expansion which is a big, yellow twelve-sided die that is a school bus with kids. You can either catch the kids and eat their brains or some of the kids will shoot you, some more than once!

Love Letter Game

, October 10, 2014
If you're looking for a cheap, easy to learn and quick card game, this is the one. There are only 16 cards in the deck and you only have one card in your hand each turn. On your turn, you draw one card and then choose which of the two you want to play. Your goal is to have the highest ranking card at the end of the game so you receive a token of affection from a princess who has locked herself away in a room ... the whole story is in the rule book (the original game came from Japan but this American version features characters and theme based on the company's other games - you can also buy the original Japanese version with different artwork but the same rules). After each round, the winner receives a small red cube (included with the game) and play continues until someone collects a set number of cubes. Games last 10 minutes at the longest and it's a great game while you're waiting on dinner or as a "palate cleanser" between longer or deeper games. The rules say this game is for two to four players but it is definitely best with 3-4. NOTE: The romantic theme might not appeal to some players (i.e. - males, primarily) and there is another game by the same designer called Lost Legacy: The Starship (along with the expansion Lost Legacy: Flying Garden and the upcoming Lost Legacy: Whitegold Spire) with a sci-fi theme and slightly more depth that is really great, too.

Ticket to Ride Game
by
Alan R. Moon

, October 10, 2014
There are essentially two board games that every serious gamer needs in their library: Settlers of Catan and Ticket To Ride. Those two games are the "new" replacements for games like Monopoly or Life. Ticket To Ride is just a great family game where each player tries to complete routes between cities by playing cards that match the colors of that particular route. This is the first edition of the game which features a map of America, and other versions of the game include maps of Europe, Asia, India, etc. The board for the game is pretty big so make sure you have room for it and all the pieces and cards. There are also expansions that include larger size cards with new routes (the cards that come with the boxed games are probably less than half the size of normal playing cards). The only real downside is that the game is a little spendy ($50 each for the full base games, less for maps you can use with the base train sets) but the quality of the components is worth it.

flux: (noun)continuous change - That definition is definitely how they came up with the name for this great card game (no matter which version you buy: Zombie, Oz, Stoner, Eco, Cthulu, Monty Python and more). It starts simply enough: You have three cards in your hand and the play rule is draw one card, play one card. That is until someone plays a new rule card which might be draw 4 or play 2 or a big selection of other rules that effect the game. The goal needed to win the game is set by a card that determines two particular "keeper" cards you need to have in front of you ... until someone changes the goal (and they will ... often) unless you have a "creeper" card that will keep you from winning ... unless the goal card says that you have to have that card. Then there are action cards that you can play which will let you steal cards, force players to discard cards ... the game is never the same, hence the name. Super fun and because the rules and goals change constantly, games can last 5 minutes or 30.

Great game! The goal is to collect gems to buy cards that generate other gems which allow you to buy more cards with points. Beautiful artwork and great quality, heavyweight, gem chips (like really nice poker chips. First player to 15 points wins. Lots of strategy as you decide which gems to buy that will allow you to get the higher level cards with the most points and you can also pull a card from the playing field and reserve it with a gold chip that acts as a wild card/joker (even if that card isn't for you to use later but one that you think another player wants). A big favorite at every game night I attend.

LOVE this game. It's a modern combination of chess, checkers and dominoes and creates its own board as you play. The goal is to surround your opponent's Queen Bee with tiles of any color (use your opponent's tiles touching the queen bee against them when you can) and each insect tile has it's own movement rules similar to chess: some bugs can crawl on top of, over jump over, other pieces, in addition to regular movements like one space or three spaces per turn. The game is much shorter than most chess games and it comes with a pouch so it's easy to carry with you (there is also a pocket edition with smaller tiles). Two players only and there are expansion sets that let you add new bugs with new movement rules. Highly recommended!
