The import and export business is not just for goliath corporations. An individual armed with the right information can get in on this enormous industry. It is big business these days - to the tune of an annual $1.2 trillion in goods, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. In 2007 alone, American companies will export $772 billion in merchandise to more than 150 foreign countries. Billions of dollars in merchandise and goods are being exchanged each day in the global marketplace. These products are bought, sold, represented, and distributed somewhere in the world on a daily basis. While basically any country can offer opportunities for import export trade, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and China have topped the trading chart for the past two decades. In the last few years, countries in the former Soviet Union and South America have become major players. Compared to other businesses, however, import export companies have a very low startup cost. You do not need any special license or degree; what you need to succeed is the expert advice presented in this new, comprehensive manual. This is a business you run from home, and travel is mostly optional. This guide provides readers with an understanding of the basic concepts of international trade and will help you navigate the maze of international trade policies and regulations. This new book is a comprehensive and detailed study of the business side of the import export business. You will learn everything from the initial startup decisions to working with U.S. and foreign companies. If you are investigating opportunities in this type of business, you should begin by reading this book. While providing detailed instruction and examples, the author leads you through every detail that will bring success. You will learn how to draw up a winning business plan (the companion CD-ROM has the actual business plan you can use in Microsoft Word(TM)) and about basic cost control systems, commercial terms, documentation, trade agreements, trade shows, cultural issues, customs and market research, the latest information on government regulations, tax laws, customs requirements, shipping procedures, how to represent U.S.-based companies, copyright and trademark issues, product pricing, distribution systems, custom brokers, international documentation, branding, foreign-trade leads, management, legal concerns, sales and marketing techniques, and pricing formulas. You will learn how to set up computer systems to save time and money, how to meet IRS requirements, how to manage and train employees, how to generate high profile public relations and publicity, and how to implement low cost internal marketing ideas. You will learn how to build your business by using low and no cost ways to satisfy customers, as well as ways to increase sales and have customers refer others to you. Successful import export experts will appreciate this valuable resource and reference it in their daily activities as a source of ready-to-use forms, Web sites, operating and cost cutting ideas, and mathematical formulas that can easily be applied to their operations. The companion CD-ROM contains all the forms found in the book, as well as a sample business plan you can adapt for your own use.

Book News Annotation:

This practical guide outlines the different options for entering the international trade business and the financial mechanics of starting an import or export company. Manresa, who managed a foreign trade zone for ten years, explains the Harmonized Tariff Schedule, the regulations governing imports, and the documentation required to export merchandise from the United States. The CD-ROM contains a sample business plan in Word format and forms from the book. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Beginning your own business is a long and difficult task, and even is even more so in creating an import export business. With the proper steps, it can be done and with careful planning, it can be successful. The book “How To Open And Operate A Financially Successful Import Export Business” gives just that. Not only does it provide the reader with detailed descriptions of the steps one takes, but it also provides to the readers many of the tools and resources available to become successful. This book does a great job of providing striving business owners of this kind with everything they need in their journey to success.
One of the things that caught my attention is the honesty and sincerity the author gives. At one point, the author mentions that she wishes she could say that the process will be an easy one, but it just is not the case. This gives the reader the sense that he or she can trust what the author has to say and establishes validity and truth to the information given by her. Unfortunately, not every book you read gives you this kind of honesty, so I found it a pleasant surprise to see this, and I am sure others would find this refreshing as well. The amount of tips the author gives are found all over the book. In fact, at times there are so many that it would probably be wise to actually take some notes while reading, that way one does not have back track.
The book provides many examples and ways to prevent legal issues, which is probably one of the most important aspects of the book. It also provides sample pages of forms and documents that can be found on an included cd-rom. An example of this is a template that follows a business plan that can be found Again, this goes back to the great amount of resources the book can give to those wanting to start their own import export business. In addition, you will sometimes come across real life case studies, which help the readers apply the knowledge the are gaining into a realistic setting. As you can see , this book can help those who are wanting to start their import export business as well as those who already have one of their own, but may need a few pointers here and there. If honesty of the author and valuable resources are important to you, be sure to pick this one up. You cannot go wrong with this one.

Maritza Manressa, experienced in the field of international trade, promises a step-by-step approach to establishing and successfully operating an import-export business. She starts at the very beginning, with information on how to set up an office, create a business identity, set up an accounting system, decide what role you want to play – agent, distributor or manufacturer, select the best location for the business, and choose the right legal structure.

A business plan is a must and Manressa provides detailed description of each section of one for an import-export business. Also included is comprehensive information on how to establish a budget for the business and operate within it to ensure success, in addition to the various types of financing available to get you started, how to go about securing that financing, and the various methods of payment import export businesses use.

An entire chapter is devoted to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule, a standardized list of all the goods that can be traded and the tariff rates associated with them. Details specific to importing and exporting are included in subsequent chapters, as well as information on how to market and advertise the business; government regulations you need to be aware of; how to conduct the business in an ethical manner, given some of the corruption and unfair labor practices that exist abroad; the individuals, agencies and organizations available to advise and assist you; and the best ways to keep up-to-date with changes in this volatile industry.

Case studies sprinkled throughout the book provide real-life examples of individuals who operate successful import-export businesses. A big bonus is the CD-ROM that comes with the book, containing all of the forms referenced therein, as well as an outline in MS Word that can be used as a template for creating a business plan.

How to Open an Import Export Business is well written, logically organized, and comprehensive reference that indeed takes you step-by-step through the process of setting up and operating a successful import-export business.

As a friend of mine runs a successful import-export business from the USA to the Philippines and back, I was very curious to see what makes this venture tic- This book hits it on the head as it’s everything my friend does, and now I’m REALLY considering starting up my own import-export business after reading this book. This sort of business really does make sense- with Europeans wanting cheap blue jeans, Americans wanting unique Japanese goods, and the people of the Philippines needing affordable American necessities, this comprehensive title keeps track of all of the important things that a business owner in this field should know before jumping in. There are TONS of legal hoops to jump through and this book makes it easier while continuing to be an interesting read on its own.

With so many important legal hurdles and financial issues that would arise from this career, this book does a good job of outlining potential problems, helps you lie out plans for your business future, and (perhaps my favorite part, since I am not yet in the business!) gives brilliant success stories of importers and exporters who have found their niche and exploited it to make TONS of money. If you are considering this line of work, or have been impressed like I have with a friend’s accomplishments in this field, this book will hold your hand the entire way. Be careful, read the book from end-to-end and do your research and you’ll be on your way too!
