Fishman and Gardner’s massive research on how students fundamentally relate to college offers critical insights into their reality. Building on their insights about the “real world” of students, the authors consider the role of higher education in a way that relates directly to students’ mindsets and make it possible to propose authentic solutions to an overwhelmingly complex system. They offer a path to connect our idealism for what education can accomplish to the reality of the real world of students and the issues they are dealing with. I was moved by the rigor and simplicity of the authors’ approach as it is so rare to consider the future of Higher Education in this combination or rigor and thoughtfulness, that truly connects the dots between what is and what can be.
