Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

I read this entire series of books in the early 1980s, and have not forgotten the experience. At times the writing was fairly "dry" - a recitation of satistics, for example. Other sections were absolutely riveting. The description of the last engagement involving battleships comes to mind. The volumes on the Pacific war are generally more interesting than the Atlantic war. More than twenty years later I still can recall trying to remember all of the types of aircraft, and realizing the importance of good logistics. I also remember learning that US torpedos were basically junk at the start of the war. Is this series a good source of trivia? Yes. Will you learn more than you ever thought you could? Yes. This series is a great addition to anyone interested in WWII. By the way, I'm a RN, not a Historian.
