I knew very little about the Uighurs — Turkic-speaking Sunni Muslims from East Turkistan in China — and their culture when I founded Witness to Guantánamo in 2008...

Publisher Comments

Smart, edgy, hilarious, and unabashedly raunchy New York Times bestselling author Samantha Irby explodes onto the printed page in her uproarious first collection of essays.

Irby laughs her way through tragicomic mishaps, neuroses, and taboos as she struggles through adulthood: chin hairs, depression, bad sex, failed relationships, masturbation, taco feasts, inflammatory bowel disease and more. Updated with her favorite Instagramable, couch-friendly recipes, this much-beloved romp is treat for anyone in dire need of Irby’s infamous, scathing wit and poignant candor.

Review

"Her candor in style and subject matter—mostly sex, dating, and the general lousiness of men—has earned Samantha Irby a cult following… Honesty mixed with self-deprecating humor is what propels reader." Time Out Chicago

Review

"Amazingly crass, defiant, witty, terrifying, and wondrous…[Irby] cuts the bawdy, wickedly funny pieces with some truly poignant palate cleansers…Irby’s voice is raw, gripping, and …Delicious." Booklist

Review

"Raunchy, funny and vivid…Those faint of heart beware…strap in and get ready for a roller-coaster ride to remember." Kirkus Reviews

Meaty (as well as her second novel/book of essays, We Are Never Meeting in Real Life) is what my heart's been aching for! It's conversational, it's hilarious, it's DEEPLY thought-provoking, it's kinda gross; it's the female version of David Sedaris and it's everything I want to say out loud but society, or friends and family, tell me I shouldn't. I cannot praise this book enough. I bought it for myself, as well as a copy for all my closest girlfriends. Sam Irby is an author who will deliver you a piece of humble pie, then smack the laughter right out of you, even if you're sitting in that pretentious coffee shop that doesn't allow gut-punch cackling. Go buy this book, read it immediately, and walk away a better person because of it (okay, okay- I really like the book, I think you get it now.)
