Jinwoo Chong: Clock In: Jinwoo Chong’s Playlist for 'Flux' (0 comment)
I had my first inklings of the novel that eventually became Flux about a year after I was laid off from my first job after college, the result of a corporate takeover of my company that eliminated my entire department. While a tough hurdle to overcome at twenty-one years old, I learned a lot about self-sufficiency....

Synopses & Reviews

Synopsis

The highly anticipated debut cookbook from the creator of The Mediterranean Dish website, with more than 120 recipes for bright and flavorful Mediterranean diet-inspired meals.

"I want to cook everything in this book It's not just beautiful--the recipes are fresh and exciting."--Gina Homolka, New York Times bestselling author of the Skinnytaste cookbooks

What began as one of the first online Mediterranean food blogs has blossomed into the leading site for modern Mediterranean cooking and lifestyle with millions of readers--and now it is the inspiration for the long-awaited first cookbook from Suzy Karadsheh. In her cookbook, Suzy brings cross-culturally inspired dishes from throughout the Mediterranean into American home kitchens, using easy-to-find ingredients and easy-to-follow, tested-to-perfection recipes to make your meals more vibrant, delicious, and yes--even a little healthier, too

Born and raised by the sea in Port Said, Egypt, Suzy lived in Michigan and Des Moines with her family before moving to Atlanta, where she now lives. Her modern cooking reflects the rich and complex traditions of the Mediterranean and Middle East, from Greece and southern Spain to Jordan and Tunisia, as well as inspiration from her new Southern roots. Practical and weeknight-easy recipes include: Spanakopita Egg Muffins, Chicken Shawarma Bowls, Garlicky Spinach and Chickpea Soup with Lemon and Pecorino Romano, Roasted Asparagus Salad with Cherry Tomatoes and Basil, Middle Eastern Rice Pilaf with Toasted Vermicelli and Pine Nuts, Orange-Cardamom Olive Oil Cake, and of course Homemade Pita Bread to serve with just about everything.

Suzy's winning combination of approachable instructions, reliable recipes, stunning photography, charming authentic stories, and simple assemblies is sure to thrill anyone hungry to eat healthier food that bursts with flavor and spice.

I looked at every Mediterranean cookbook I could find and decided this one and one other, Gloria Reiber's, were the best. I have been using this one and the meals have been excellent. The ingredients listed are generally great but I have to substitute sometimes if I don't happen to have everything. The instructions are sometimes a bit unclear but it is possible to figure them out. I would recommend this book without reservation along with the Reiber book, Mediterranean diet cookbook for beginners. Other material on nutrition can be found here: mwir-nutrition.blogspot.

This book was an interesting and uplifting introduction to a facet of Mediterranean cuisine that I don’t often think of when I think Mediterranean: namely Egyptian fare. The book contains the beautiful photography that the publisher is known for, which is helpful to know what the finished dish should look like. It also provides a very thorough overview of ingredients common to a Mediterranean kitchen. A QR code provides an option to acquire certain recommended ingredients if you can’t find them locally. For me, a lot of the recipes contained more steps than I would pursue unless I was making a special occasion dish, and I am still trying to decide if I like the flavor profiles of a lot of these recipes. Sumac, coriander and cinnamon are seen often, and those are not typical ingredients in my regular repertoire. But I have made the garlic-chickpea soup several times with ingredients I typically keep in my pantry, and have enjoyed how the spices come together brightened by the hit of fresh lemon. I would recommend this book for those who know they have an affection for this type of cuisine, and I thank Clarkson Potter for the gift of this cookbook in exchange for my unbiased review. The book has expanded my repertoire, and would also be a good choice for others wanting to do the same.
