Synopsis

The haunting new thriller from Alex North, author of the New York Times bestseller The Whisper Man

You knew a teenager like Charlie Crabtree. A dark imagination, a sinister smile--always on the outside of the group. Some part of you suspected he might be capable of doing something awful. Twenty-five years ago, Crabtree did just that, committing a murder so shocking that it's attracted that strange kind of infamy that only exists on the darkest corners of the internet--and inspired more than one copycat.

Paul Adams remembers the case all too well: Crabtree--and his victim--were Paul's friends. Paul has slowly put his life back together. But now his mother, old and senile, has taken a turn for the worse. Though every inch of him resists, it is time to come home.

It's not long before things start to go wrong. Reading the news, Paul learns another copycat has struck. His mother is distressed, insistent that there's something in the house. And someone is following him. Which reminds him of the most unsettling thing about that awful day twenty-five years ago.

It wasn't just the murder.

It was the fact that afterward, Charlie Crabtree was never seen again...

Synopsis

"If you liked The Whisper Man, you'll love this. Alex North has crafted a second novel which is just as gripping as his first and even scarier. Hugely atmospheric and deliciously creepy, it's about how the past encroaches on the present, and how dreaming influences reality, until in the frightening world of The Shadows, it becomes harder and harder to tell one from the other... and the nightmare takes over."
- Alex Michaelides, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Silent Patient

Synopsis

This is absorbing, headlong reading, a play on classic horror with an inventiveness of its own... As with all the best illusions, you are left feeling not tricked, but full of wonder.

This psychological thriller follows a man named Paul Adams, who left his home town after he was linked to a murder done by a group of teenage boys. Now back to visit his dying mother, it seems like there is a copycat murderer on the loose. I really liked this book, but that being said, it took me a while to get into it. It felt like little bits of information were fed to us bit by bit which was good in the middle and end of the story and good for the overall story plot, but it made the story hard to start. Additionally, the flip flop between Paul's current self's point of you and his past self's point of view was a little confusing, but I really liked Detective Amanda Beck's point of view. There were a lot of very interesting details in this book that I don't commonly see, lucid dreaming being the main one. While I didn't like this book as much as The Whisper Man, it's still a good read!

This was an excellent and spooky thriller. A tragedy happened long ago and as soon as he could Paul left his home town and didn’t really look back. He’s come back now as his mother is dying and lost in dementia but he finds the past has not forgotten him. Haunted by his choices made and those of others he tries to unravel the past before the past catches up to him. He learns his tragic history of the death of a peer has been replicated in several identical murders over the years and past and present violently collide. This was a very well written tale that was full of twists that kept me riveted and surprised several times. Every time I felt like I knew what was coming I was soon proven wrong. The characters were enticing and the story addicting.

The Shadows' main character is Paul Adams who returns to his home of Gritten Wood after an absence of 25 years because his mother is in hospice, near her end. Paul left because of the horrifying murder of one of his friends by very disturbed teenagers, Charlie Crabtree and Billy Roberts. Billy confesses and is convicted, but Charlie, the instigator, disappears, never to be seen again. There are rumors that Charlie is hiding in The Shadows, the dark, sinister woods surrounding the town. There have been copycat murders over the years which fuel the idea that Charlie is still out there. This book is told through Paul's point of view but also that of Detective Amanda Beck who is investigating one of the copycat murders. The Shadows is an absolutely compelling read with multiple twists, turns and revelations. It is chilling, spooky, creepy and terrifying and impossible to put down.

Woah. My head is still spinning. I have yet to read Alex North’s The Whisper Man, but let me tell you, his sophomore follow-up is a home run. The story takes place in both the present and 25 years in the past, as it tells the story of Charlie Crabtree, teenage murderer, and the copycat killings that follow. As would be told by my life coach, Stefon, this book has everything: lucid dreaming, bloody handprints, the creepy woods behind your house, and a second hand bookstore. I especially resonated with the main character, Paul. Paul is the only one of his friend group who escaped the influence of Creepy Charlie Crabtree, and managed to escape his browbeaten hometown to boot. When he comes home for the first time in 25 years to visit his dying mother, the past he was trying to avoid explodes into his present in ways no one, certainly not I, saw coming. Add this to your summer reading list immediately. You don’t want to “sleep” on this one! Thanks to Celadon and BookishFirst for the ARC!
