Excerpt from The 'Fan Kwae' at Canton: Before Treaty Days, 1825-1844
The first edition of The 'fan Kwae' at Canton was published in 1 882. The Author, who used the pseudonym of An Old Resident was the late William C. Hunter, who for many years was a partner in the firm of Russell and Co., at Canton. He died at Nice in June, 1891, a few days after the failure of that firm.
