Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Thom Creed is used to being on his own.

Even as a high-school basketball star, he has to keep his distance because of his father. Hal Creed had once been one of the greatest and most beloved superheroes of The League — until the Wilson Towers incident. After that, Thom's mother disappeared and his proud father became an outcast. The last thing in the world Thom would ever want is to disappoint his father.

So — Thom keeps two secrets from him: First is that he's gay. The second is that he has the power to heal people.

Initially, Thom had trouble controlling his powers. Butwith trial and error he improves, until he gets so good that he catches the attention of the League and is asked to join. Even though he knows it would kill his dad, Thom can't resist. When he joins the League, he meets a motley crew of other heroes, including tough-talking Scarlett, who has the power of fire from growing up near a nuclear power plant; Typhoid Larry, who makes everyone sick by touching them, but is actually a really sweet guy; and wise Ruth, who has the power to see the future.

Together these unlikely heroes become friends and begin to uncover a plot to kill the superheroes. Along the way, Thom falls in love, and discovers the difficult truth about his parents' past. This is a moving, funny, and wonderfully original novel that shows that things are not always what they seem, and love can be found in the unlikeliest of places.

Synopsis

Perry Moore, the executive producer of Disney and Walden Medias film adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, now tells an unforgettable story about the coming of age of a young superhero. Thom Creed must come to terms with his fathers past and discover the kind of hero he really wants to be, in this groundbreaking novel of love, loss, and redemption.

Synopsis

The last thing in the world Thom Creed wants is to add to his father's pain, so he keeps secrets. Like that he has special powers. And that he's been asked to join the League the very organization of superheroes that spurned his dad. But the most painful secret of all is one Thom can barely face himself: he's gay.

But becoming a member of the League opens up a new world to Thom. There, he connects with a misfit group of aspiring heroes, including Scarlett, who can control fire but not her anger; Typhoid Larry, who can make anyone sick with his touch; and Ruth, a wise old broad who can see the future. Like Thom, these heroes have things to hide; but they will have to learn to trust one another when they uncover a deadly conspiracy within the League.

To survive, Thom will face challenges he never imagined. To find happiness, he'll have to come to terms with his father's past and discover the kind of hero he really wants to be.

Super good, very well written. About acceptance and tolerance, but still very entertaining.

What a disappointment! How I had hoped that this novel, featuring a gay teen with superpowers, would dazzle me with its originality and style. I couldn’t have been more wrong. To start the novel is not well written; it clunks along, jam-packed with verbs and clipped sentences; pacing that is schizophrenic and a bushel of plot points that don’t add up. It never settles into a place where the reader can get to know our hero or understanding the mishmash of character motivations. The plot revolves around Thom Creed, son of Hal Creed, once the famous and now infamous, Major Mighty, and his struggle to become one of the League, a band of superheroes that protect the world from evil. Along the away, Moore gets sidetracked by Thom’s emerging homosexuality and the embarrassment of what it will mean for his homophobic father. Granted Moore wrote this book in 2007, but it's sad that a book about a gay superhero had to be reduced to coping with shame and embarrassment. Aren't we passed that? And if not, Moore’s novel isn’t helping the cause for gay teens everywhere. There’s not a likeable character in the bunch (okay, maybe Ruth), they’re cruel to each other and saddled with bad parenting and an idealizing a way of life that, as revealed at the end of the novel, doesn’t exist. It was frustrating and annoying reading page after page of confusing character and relationship development and badly edited prose (if Thom comes home in the evening, then pages later the sun shouldn’t be rising, should it?). And who would want to end up with Thom anyway? He’s a mess, shaped by an abusive and unrelenting father and a lousy, runaway mother. How this book made it onto gay lists is a head-scratching phenomenon. Where is the young adult novel featuring the teen that hey, happens to be gay, who is content with that and tells a great story that doesn’t ever include the word “faggot”? When that book comes out, I’ll be the first to read it, and hopefully love every moment.

Thoughtful, engrossing and ground-breaking? Yes. Overall, it is an entertaining book that is very accessible and I highly recommend it for its intended audiences, young adults/teens. I also recommend it for older readers that want to read an authentic old-time comic.

Action packed and overflowing with comic nostalgia, Hero is a timely, emotionally resonant, and humorous coming-of-age tale. It frustrates me when people say that this book isn't for everyone, or are surprised or offended by the subject matter. Why? The content of the book is so absolutely relevant in today's world and the author's fantastic methodologies are so subtle, that the content can hardly be deemed inappropriate. Don't allow society to mold your individual preferences or you will continue to miss the little treasures like 'Hero' that help separate us from the naivete of the bandwagon of intolerance.
