Synopsis

What is it we cannot hold in our hands that holds us like a fist? This is the question that June, Reni and Sandy must answer. Each of them only wants to return to college to study and write poetry, but the circumstances of their lives make this impossible. Set in 1980s Chicago, June, a trophy wife, denies her future by submerging herself in domestic life as she tries to repair a damaged and dangerous marriage. Reni, embracing her anger, decides becoming a call girl is both her fate and a fast-track to earning tuition and living independently. Sandy, a factory worker, falls deeply in love with an eccentric young artist who promises to return her to a time of unadulterated innocence. With each turn through tragic loss and increasing silence, they slowly realize that it is that very silence they've been burdened to keep that prevents them not only from realizing their hopes, but the possibility of any meaningful existence. Sentencing Silence takes the reader on a journey of self-discovery toward breaking the silence inherent in rape culture and sexual abuse that holds its survivors captive in the traumatic pasts that thwart their dreams.

I have never read another book quite like Sentencing Silence. Ms. Nesbitt's skill pulled me in to the lives and circumstances of each persona. I became fully vested in their stories and really wanted to see how it all turned out, though of course I was hoping for the best possible outcomes. It was a surprising feeling because the subject matter is unfamiliar to me such that I did not relate to the characters or their experiences. Despite this, and testament to Nesbitt's mastery, I was enthralled, shocked, angry, happy, sad, and probably a few other emotions at various points in the book. Make no mistake, Sentencing Silence covers some serious, difficult subject matter. Even so, it was a fantastic read that left me wanting more from Kathleen Nesbitt.

My review of Sentencing Silence will never come close to even scratching the surface of this novel's depth. The intricate and yet not wordy details flowed from the pages to my mind as effortlessly as if I knew them already. The delicate ebb and flow between characters and stories juxtaposed with the stark, black and white reality of their trauma is guttural and breathtaking. I literally could not put the book down. I found myself relating to all of them in myriad ways. Absolutely stunning. Truly. Thank you so much Kathleen Cecilia Nesbitt for writing it and bleeding out onto the page. I could feel in every word. It's truly and utterly magnificent.

This book is not for everyone, but it holds truths that will be familiar to anyone with the courage to face and embrace recovery. It takes place in Chicago in the 80s, and it will take Chicago readers of a certain age back to many old haunts and scenes. While it is a woman’s story, men should be challenged as well by the story to look at their own behavior and to examine what it is that holds their hands so tightly– and leads them to use them. In the stories of three young women in their twenties—June, the young trophy bride who aims to please, Reni, the call girl who thinks she calls the shots, and Sandy, the iconoclast who jumps into factory work to provide for a life of love and art – the reader can identify parts of themselves and actions that they never understood. In this case, the recovery is a physical recovery, but the metaphor of finding words to create the sentences out of silence in finding the way to truth is powerful. It’s a tough story of redemption with love and acceptance found hiding in unexpected as well as expected corners.
