Kelsey Ford: Powell's Picks Spotlight: Kelly Link's 'White Cat, Black Dog' (0 comment)
I vividly remember the night I was first introduced to Kelly Link’s work. I was 18 — young and dumb and wildly shy, living across the country from where I grew up. In Link’s new book, there’s a line that goes “Like the werewolf, we are uneasy in human spaces and human company...

Outlining the new worldview of conscious evolution, futurist Barbara Marx Hubbard has written a call to action for the current generation to fulfill its creative potential. Only in the past sixty years has humanity gained the scientific and technological powers to destroy or enhance the planet's life-support system. The current generation has the ability to abuse or conserve these powers, to act, in a way, as cocreator. Conscious Evolution reveals the path of the cocreator, born out of humanity's new powers and society's new spirituality. During this collective quantum leap of creative emergence, Hubbard says, we must quickly become capable of wise and ethical guidance of humanity's evolution itself, if life on Earth as we know it is to survive.

Originally published at the turn of the twenty-first century, Conscious Evolution offered both far-reaching vision and next-step suggestions for humanity's first steps into the next millenium. With this revised edition, Barbara Marx Hubbard brings the details up to date, making her vision more relevant than ever for twenty-first-century changemakers. She describes the increasingly important role of the Internet, discusses new initiatives in education that have been inspired by her work, and much more.

Synopsis

When renowned futurist Barbara Marx Hubbard first issued this groundbreaking call to action she was confronting the state of affairs at the momentous turn of the twenty-first century. Her clear-eyed, inspiring, and wide-sweeping vision of a possible and#151; and essential and#151; global renaissance at the new millennium earned her devotees in a variety of disciplines, from Marianne Williamson and Gary Zukav to Eric Utne and former United Nations Assistant Secretary General Robert Muller. Now, because the times are ever more ripe for and#151; and in need of and#151; radical reimagining, Hubbard has updated her vision. She shows how newfound scientific knowledge and technological advances can foster rather than impede transformational action. Consistently and#147;ahead of her time,and#8221; Hubbard speaks to contemporary change-makers with the wisdom of past experience and a passion for new possibility.

Synopsis

A Seminal Work of Visionary Hope, Updated for the 21st Century

In this era of government gridlock, economic and ecological devastation, and seemingly intractable global violence, our future is ever more ripe for and#8212; and in need of and#8212; fresh, creative reimagining. With her clear-eyed, inspiring, and sweeping vision of a possible global renaissance in the new millennium, Barbara Marx Hubbard shows us that our current crises are not the precursors of an apocalypse but the natural birth pains of an awakened, universal humanity. This is our finest hour. Conscious Evolution highlights the tremendous potential of newfound scientific knowledge, technological advances, and compassionate spirituality and illustrates the opportunities that each of us has to fully participate in this exciting stage of human history. As we do, we will bring forth all that is within us and not only save ourselves, but evolve our world.

About the Author

Buckminster Fuller has called Barbara Marx Hubbard "the best informed human now alive regarding futurism and the foresights it has produced." Widely regarded as his philosophical heir, Fuller is a social innovator, speaker, author, educator, and noted futurist. She is president of the Foundation for Conscious Evolution and one of the co-founding board members of the World Future Society. The author of several books on social and planetary evolution, she has produced, hosted, and contributed to countless documentaries seen by millions of people around the world. These include the 14-part television series Potentials, where she interviewed some of our greatest futurists, including Buckminster Fuller, Norman Cousins, and Gene Roddenberry, and a DVD series of documentaries entitled Humanity Ascending: A New Way through Together. In conjunction with the Shift Network, she co-produced a worldwide "Birth 2012" multimedia event, a turning point in highlighting the social, spiritual, scientific, and technological potential in humanity. As a citizen diplomat in the former Soviet Union during the 1980s, Hubbard co-chaired a number of Soviet-American Citizen Summits, introducing a new form of conferencing called SYNCON to foster synergistic convergence. In 1984 Hubbard's name was placed in nomination for the vice presidency of the United States on the Democratic ticket.
