Helen Schulman: Powell's Q&A: Helen Schulman, author of 'Lucky Dogs' (0 comment)
Describe your latest book. I felt like I was on fire the whole time I was writing Lucky Dogs, even when I was downed by long-haul Covid. The book was fueled by all the breaking articles about high-powered men using their considerable resources to get away with sexual abuse on a massive scale...

Synopsis

Q: When trusting your baser instincts threatens to strip your hold on sanity, who do you turn to?A: A turkey in the woods.I AnimalA primal force awakens in Tommy after learning of his mother's impending death. She's all right, not in the hospital on life support or anything, but her days are numbered. Returning to Buffalo made all kinds of sense, but Tommy's efforts to "take care of" his mom face plant when she refuses to let him help around the house. He teeters on the cusp of crashing into old patterns - but this canine has learned a few tricks since leaving for LA. Tommy engages his writer-brain in passing the time concocting elaborate plots and second-guessing his cousin's livelihood - certain something more nefarious is brewing. And yet, who is he to point fingers when waking up covered in dirt with no memory becomes a regular "thing".Amidst a neurotic, potentially psychotic, break Tommy is forced to face a past ready to plow right into his future.Reminiscent of Salinger's Catcher in the Rye, I Animal immerses you in the head space of a Xennial neuroses. An amazing story of a dysfunctional family full of fun, laughter, love, and a sprinkle of crime.

Literary Fiction Lover , November 28, 2018
I Animal is a humorous and thoughtful literary fiction novel about an LA writer, Tommy D’Angelo, who must return to his hometown of Buffalo, NY in order to care for his ailing mother. While home, the stress of being around family causes him to feel like he’s turning into some kind of wolf-like creature. His anxiety further manifests in a manic desire to uncover what nefarious activity his second cousin, Little Sal, is up to around the neighborhood. Ultimately, Tommy realizes he loves his family, as strange as they are. Furthermore, his imagined nightly jaunts as a wolf-man help him come to terms with what it means to be a human being. I’d recommend I Animal if you enjoy stories about the tough love experienced among members of a family, especially if you have a sense of humor.
