The work begins in 1860, continuing the story of the African military campaign, this time narrated by a "prophet" of peace. It features romance, a kidnapping, espionage, and both religious and military conflicts.

La obra comienza en el a o 1860, cuando contin a la campa a africana iniciada en la anterior novela, narrada y protagonizada esta vez por el profeta de la paz, el enamoradizo e incorregible don Juan Santiuste. Con la ayuda de El Nasiry, otro miembro de la familia Ans rez, abandonar Tetu n para llegar a T nger, desde donde retornar a la pen nsula.
En este periplo tendr tiempo para: enfrentarse a Leoncio Ans rez, de quien hab a sido disc pulo en el oficio de cerrajero; olvidar a Lucila Ans rez; raptar a Yohar, la hija de un jud o principal de Tetu n; e intentar huir con una de las mujeres de su protector y amigo El Nasiry, anteriormente Gonzalo Ans rez.
Una vez en Madrid, su protector y h roe de esta serie de los Episodios Nacionales, el marqu s de Beramendi, lo enviar en misi n de espionaje privado a Tortosa, donde hay rumores de una nueva sublevaci n carlista aprovechando que el grueso del ej rcito a n se encuentra en Marruecos, consolidando la paz firmada.
All encontrar Santiuste al Arcipreste, un peculiar y feroz cura carlista, y a Donata, una de sus protegidas, con quien huir con la ayuda de Diego Ans rez, marinero y miembro de la ya citada familia.
Y tambi n conoceremos a otro componente, Gil Ans rez, un trapero vendedor de reliquias falsas.
