Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Publisher Comments

Eddie thinks nothing ever happens in his small, boring town. Every day is exactly the same, down to what the bus driver will say when he picks each kid up in the morning. But then, one day, someone new, and very pretty, walks onto the bus. At least, Eddie thinks she’s new, but there is something oddly familiar about Scarlett. Intrigued (and smitten), Eddie starts to follow Scarlett—and what he discovers is odder still. Scarlett is a Senior Echo Time Agent from the future, come to his town to investigate the origin of time travel, which, unbeknownst to Eddie, was invented right in his hometown, by someone he knew. Soon Eddie is swept up in the investigation and in time. But time travel is a dangerous business, and Eddie will learn more than he wants to know about his long-dead mother.

This psychologically rich thriller redefines the time travel novel for a teen audience.

Review

"These two top-of-their-game authors don't disappoint." - Publisher's Weekly Starred Review

"A clever, timely story that will attract any teen with a Facebook account." - Booklist, Starred Review

"Without question a page-turner." - Kirkus Reviews

"Highly engaging.a tremendously likable, soul-searching romantic comedy and a subtle reminder to occasionally unplug and live in the moment." School and Library Journal

Review

"At once a classic time-travel narrative and resonant fable about the price to be paid when we alter our world simply because we can, this smart, satisfying eco-techno-thriller with heart transcends genre."

Review

"Funny and endearing...a gem."

Review

"This playful time-bending saga twists in, out, and around so often that readers are forced to stay on their toes, but the effort is well worth it as Jones introduces heady ideas about memory, reality, and existence."

Synopsis

What if you could see how your life would unfold--just by clicking a button?

It's 1996, and less than half of all American high school students have ever used the Internet. Emma just got her first computer and an America Online CD-ROM. Josh is her best friend. They power up and log on--and discover themselves on Facebook, fifteen years in the future. Everybody wonders what their destiny will be. Josh and Emma are about to find out.

Synopsis

Josh and Emma are about to discover themselves--fifteen years in the future

It's 1996, and Josh and Emma have been neighbors their whole lives. They've been best friends almost as long--at least, up until last November, when everything changed. Things have been awkward ever since, but when Josh's family gets a free AOL CD-ROM in the mail, his mom makes him bring it over so that Emma can install it on her new computer. When they sign on, they're automatically logged onto Facebook . . . but Facebook hasn't been invented yet. Josh and Emma are looking at themselves fifteen years in the future.

Their spouses, careers, homes, and status updates--it's all there. And every time they refresh their pages, their futures change. As they grapple with the ups and downs of what their lives hold, they're forced to confront what they're doing right--and wrong--in the present.

About the Author

Jay Asher (www.jayasher.blogspot.com) got the idea for Thirteen Reasons Why at a museum. While taking an audio tour, he was struck by the eeriness of the voice in his ear - a woman who described exactly what he was looking at but wasn't there. Jay lives on the central coast of California.

Carolyn Mackler (www.carolynmackler.com) is the author of the teen novels The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things (A Michael L. Printz Honor Book), Tangled, Guyaholic, Vegan Virgin Valentine, and Love and Other Four-Letter Words. In 2008, Carolyn was a judge for the National Book Award for Young People's Literature. She lives in New York City with her husband and two young sons.

An entertaining enough look at what it'd be like to see your Facebook from the future, before you even knew what it was. The butterfly/ripple effect was interesting to see play out as the characters try to change or maintain the future they see. A decently fun read, but in the end it doesn't tell us anything we don't already know: trying to change the future is bad and Facebook isn't an accurate representation of happiness.

The Future of Us by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler Reviewed by Moirae the fates book reviews It's 1996, and less than half of all American high school students have ever used the Internet. Emma just got her first computer and an America Online CD-ROM. Josh is her best friend. They power up and log on--and discover themselves on Facebook, fifteen years in the future. Everybody wonders what their Destiny will be. Josh and Emma are about to find out. (Synopsis provided by goodreads) After reading Asher's first book I was eager to get a hold of this one. I was lucky enough to read it in ARC form. This is a very different book then 13 reasons why is. I liked this one a lot, the idea was fun and original. I really liked Josh's character he was laid back, Emma was his polar opposite she tightly wound. I really liked the dual narration and the chapters alternating POV's. It was difficult to tell which author wrote which part. (Asher wrote Josh's POV and Mackler wrote Emma's) the POV's flowed seamlessly and that was really amazing. Each character wants something different, one is unhappy with their Facebook profile and the other is very happy, they find that little things they do cause "ripples" of change and what they do or don't do in 1996, changes what their Facebook pages say from one log in to the next. If you are a fan of either author, I'd say give this one a try, I really liked it. * Hardcover: 356 pages * Publisher: Razorbill (November 21, 2011) * Language: English * ISBN-10: 1595144919 * Author: Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler * Cover Art: I like the distorted image it gives off * Overall rating: **** out of 5 stars * Obtained:Won ARC from Jay Asher, Thank you very much!
