Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all.

Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he’s seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line.

Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home — and his own art — through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.

Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan’s unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope.

About the Author

Katherine Applegate’s many books include the Roscoe Riley Rules chapter book series, the picture book The Buffalo Storm, and the award-winning novel Home of the Brave. With her husband, Michael Grant, she wrote the hugely popular series Animorphs, which has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide.

Katherine was inspired to write The One and Only Ivan after reading about the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, the Shopping Mall Gorilla. The real Ivan lived alone in a tiny cage for twenty-seven years at a shopping mall before being moved to Zoo Atlanta after a public outcry. He is now a beloved celebrity at the zoo, which houses the nation’s largest collection of western lowland gorillas. Ivan is well known for his paintings, which he “signs” with a thumb-print.

Katherine lives in California with her husband and two children.

Not only did I love it, but it's a favorite among my 4th graders. A heart-felt read for any animal lover, middle grader reader or not.

**Applegate, Katherine. The One and Only Ivan. 10 East 53rd Street, New York, NY: HarperCollins Children's Books, 2012. Print. 304 pages. “When Ivan, a gorilla, who has lived for years in a down-and -out circus -themed mall, meets Ruby, a baby elephant that has been added to the mall, he decides that he must find her a better life.” This is the summary by the author/publisher ~ but the story is so much more...more compassion, more sorrow, more angst, more wonder and worry about how people treat animals for their own gain, and how “principle” can triumph over using animals personal greed. The reader also gains an understanding of just how smart animals are. I’m not sure a person can read or listen to this book without tears and anguish ~ and without feeling a sense of hope. It is a call to action, and the reader/listener will understand that and respond. Thumbs up. (by the way, this is marketed as a children's book, but it is for absolutely for ALL ages to read and enjoy ~ and be changed after reading it.)

The Family that Reads , January 27, 2014 (view all comments by The Family that Reads)
The name of this book is "The one and only Ivan". This story is about a Silverback gorilla. This gorilla is not any ordinary gorilla. This gorilla is being held captive for 25 years in a cage. Ivan has been held at Big Top 8 Mall and Video Arcade. I would recommend this book. I think this book should be read out loud. It is the most beautiful and simple book I think I have ever read. Written by Fanciful Fashion Kid, age 8.

I picked up The One and Only Ivan and never put it down until I was finished. Ivan is a gorilla living in a strip mall and is part of the entertainment for the mall's shoppers. As strange as this might seem...the story was insprired from a real life gorilla who was living in a strip mall in Tacoma, Washington. Ivan narrates the story and opens up the world of the captive animal to the reader. The story really deals with so many issues...friendship, kindness, sorrow, triump, and love. I came away with a new perspective of what cruelties we humans subject on the beautiful animals of the worid and how freindship, commintment, and love are so important to us all. Trust me....you will love this book!

Hands down the best book of 2012. Written in verse from the perspective of Ivan, a gorilla who has been captive for his whole life without ever seeing another gorilla. Based on Ivan, the gorilla who lived in a Tacoma mall for many years, this book is just touching enough without being saccharine.
