Synopses & Reviews
The creator of
Olive, the Other Reindeer and other zany tales lends his offbeat talent to a timeless classic, making
Alice in Wonderland a pop-up treat that's as wonderfully unique as the original book.
In seven eye-popping scenes that use original text from Lewis Carroll's tale, J. Otto Seibold shows Alice falling down the rabbit hole, visiting the Duchess, having tea with the Mad Hatter, and more. Each of Seibold's spreads features his signature exaggerated artwork screwy-eyed, often scruffy characters are set alongside multi-font text illustrating large, complex pop-ups, with extra flaps, pull tabs, wheels, and an extra-large flap on the right sides revealing even more surprises. Notable spreads include Alice's arrival in Wonderland showcasing a wheel that moves Alice's large body inside the White Rabbit's house and a large pop-up of the hookah-smoking blue caterpillar atop his mushroom (Alice's neck grows longer when readers pull her head) the Cheshire Cat meeting that turns the feline invisible when you pull a tab, and the final scene where Alice tells off the Queen and jury.
Loaded with Wonderland-ish surprises and Seibold's wry humor, this well-made extravaganza is sure to thrill kids, impress collectors, and win over Alice lovers.
Review
"[E]ye-catching....Seibold's obsessive inclusion of excessive graphic minutiae throughout his tableaus is what makes his Alice totally engrossing and worth reading more than once." Steven Heller, The New York Times
Review
"The pops conceived by Seibold and paper engineer James R. Diaz are a lot of fun. Each spread contains a dizzying array of devices and effects, including a particularly clever rendering of the vanishing Cheshire cat." Jennifer Mattson, Booklist
Review
"Seibold's zany re-envisioning...is not for purists....There are a number of pull-tabs that will intrigue young readers....This is an enjoyable, though if compared to the Sabuda ephemeral romp." Kirkus Reviews
Review
"[W]here this book is lacking in sleek engineering and storytelling, it does offer avant-garde aesthetics....Seibold's funny, non-moveable books, such as the Mr. Lunch series, better convey the illusion of action and excitement." Publishers Weekly
Review
"Seibold's vision is not Disney's sweetly saccharine one....The end result is a fascinating take on Carroll's vision. It is wildly original, yes, but perhaps not for more conservative tastes." Kathleen Karr, Children's Literature
