Dizz Tate: Books That Made Me Want to Write: Dizz Tate’s Bookshelf for Brutes (0 comment)
When I was writing my book, Brutes, there came a point where I wanted to be thinking about it even when I was so tired of it I couldn’t bear to look at it anymore. I was also terrified of leaving it alone, like the book would forget me if I stopped reminding it I was there...

Publisher Comments

"A boldly beautiful page-turner about loving and losing someone with mental illness. I'll be recommending this absorbing memoir for years to come." —Cheryl Strayed, best-selling author of Wild

Even as a reporter, Sheila Hamilton missed the signs as her husband Davids mental illness unfolded before her. By the time she had pieced together the puzzle, it was too late. Her once brilliant and passionate partner was dead within six weeks of a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, leaving his young daughter and wife without so much as a note to explain his actions, a plan to help them recover from their profound grief, or a solution for the hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt that they would inherit from him.

All the Things We Never Knew takes readers on a breathtaking journey from David and Sheila's romance through the last three months of their life together and into the year after his death. It details their unsettling spiral from ordinary life into the world of mental illness, examines the fragile line between reality and madness, and reveals the true power of love and forgiveness.

Review

"Sheila Hamilton's All The Things We Never Knew is one of the most candid, heart-wrenching, and deeply moving accounts of the wake of destruction caused by the suicide of a loved one. Her book reminds us of those we've lost to suicide. The book casts the dark shadow that is depression, then rises from such darkness, reminding us to 'Look to the living, love them, and hold on.' Finally, it gives survivors tremendous resolve to continue in their quest for prevention.” Kevin Hines, mental health speaker, activist, and author of Cracked, Not Broken: Surviving and Thriving After a Suicide Attempt

Review

"All the Things We Never Knew is the rare memoir that's as harrowing as it is heartwarming, and Sheila Hamilton is the rarest of writers — a disciplined reporter with a masterful understanding of the workings of the human heart. This extraordinary story, about the mystery and scars of mental illness, is sobering and compelling and simply unputdownable.” Karen Karbo, bestselling author of The Gospel According to Coco Chanel and How Georgia Became O'Keefe

Review

"If you've ever asked the question 'Do I need help?' or 'Does my loved one need help? then read this book. Merging her gut-wrenching personal story with all-pro journalistic acumen, Sheila Hamilton gives us the who-what-where-when-why of mental illness and what you can do to get the help you need. Most of all, this book gives us permission not to go through hardship alone, no matter what crises we face." Laura Munson, New York Times best-selling author of This Is Not The Story You Think It Is, and founder of Haven Writing Retreats

Thank you for sharing your story, Sheila; I like the title a lot because it says what many of us have said before you, and again....."I never new". My second marriage was to an alcoholic, and because I had never lived with the disease, nor with anyone suffering from it, I did not know the signs, symptoms or what to look for. It can be a very silent one, as well, and I so appreciate you bringing this title to the forefront of our minds as it may pertain in many way not even yet thought about! You are a GEM!

All the Things We Never Knew is a heartbreaking and inspirational personal account of loving someone with a serious mental illness. Journalist, Sheila Hamilton, tells her story in a sparse, candid, poignant style that is easy to read, but hard to forget. Along with her story, Sheila Hamilton shares the shameful facts about the dismal state of mental health care in the U.S. and the desperation and frustration of families desperately seeking help for a loved one. Most importantly, she uses her personal experiences, both the admirable ones, and the regrettable ones, to help those trying to live with the pain, confusion and anger that comes with loving someone who suffers from a mental disease. Sheila Hamilton's honesty will help many people and hopefully, help encourage more honest conversations about a disease that has become a national health crisis.

When you first meet Sheila Hamilton - the tall, thin, beautiful model-like woman who is an award-winning TV and radio personally with the handsome husband, beautiful daughter, adorable little dog - your first thought is "This woman has the perfect life, I want to be like her." And then I read her book and realized I am like her. We've both experienced the worst headache imaginable, the decline of a once loving husband to mental illness and eventual suicide. And that one event makes us a member of the same horrible club, sisters on the same winding bumpy road. Sheila has written a book that tells the truth about mental illness and suicide, the stigma that surrounds both, and rebuilding your life. It turns out that our husbands weren't too different from each other, they could have easily been friends, and died by suicide within months of each other. Sheila and I did not know each other but we were given membership to the same club by men we loved with our whole heart. In "All the Things We Never Knew" by Sheila Hamilton you'll find love, sadness, laughter, denial, and heartbreak. But most of all you'll be educated and given hope. At the end of each chapter she has included a page of statistics and information about mental illness, suicide, grief, and recovery. I have already recommended this book to several people and will continue for a long time.
