Synopses & Reviews
Delmarva Peninsula is comprised of much of Delaware, the Eastern Shore of Maryland and a small portion of Virginia. The physical isolation of the region has created a distinct culture and set of lore, and the residents consider themselves so separate from their respective states that there have been several attempts made to secure statehood for Delmarva. Despite this desire to break away from outside influences, the residents welcome the many tourists who come to the coastal areas. The region is home to such tourist hotspots as Rehoboth Beach (DE), Ocean City (MD), and Chincoteague, (VA). Local journalist David Healey has been writing about the region for about twenty years. With this book, Healey taps into the rich and distinctive lore of this storied region. Legends range from the more sinister stories of slave catcher Thomas McCreary and infamous pirates Captain Kidd and Blackbeard to tales of how the small town of St. Michael's Maryland outwitted the British Army during the War of 1812, the extraordinary life of Delmarva native Harriet Tubman and the heroic deeds of a faithful horse. A good VA legend to mention is the one about how the wild horses came to inhabit Chincoteague.
