This volume publishes the proceedings of the 27th Battle Conference held in 2004. Twelve papers approach Norman history, in England and on the Continent, from a variety of perspectives, drawing on chronicles and other literary and documentary sources, as well as, to a lesser degree, archaeological evidence. Subjects include: the Normans on crusade; Gilbert Foliot; an account of the Battle of Alencon; 12th-century Anglo-French peace conferences; Peter of Blois; Normandy and Norman identity in southern Italian chronicles; monastic chronicles in the 12th-century Abruzzi; the Orationes of Lawrence of Durham; the Angevin kings and canon law; the zooarchaeology of the Norman Conquest; Thomas Becket. One paper in French; the rest in English.
