Mikel
, April 25, 2007
A most compelling telling of the famous French expedition which, at great cost, successfully completed a climb of the Himalayan peak, Annapurna, which even today is probably the toughest climb of all the 8000 meter peaks. Herzog and his expedition undertook the challange without benefit of an accurate map or the wisdom of previous climbers. They were outfitted with the newest equipment and clothing of the time, but which in 2007 seems quite inadequate. Nevertheless, they were able to overcome the potentially deadly environment of the mountain partly due to luck, but mostly because of the excellent leadership skills of Herzog, the close cooperation of the whole team, and the group's desire to bring renown to France and the French Alpine Club. Herzog's tale reads like the best of mystery stories and is one that the reader almost cannot put down until the end. Those interested in climbing and not will find this a fantastic read.
