Translated by Peter and Linda Murray, the text by Chastel, a French expert on the Italian Renaissance, is phenomenal, and the translation excellent. It came out originally in French as "Chronicle" of Italian Renaissance painting, and it is partitioned into key dates marking events by key artworks. The writer is tremendous and so is the text, still today authoritative; already interested in studios and political context, Chastel covers a few works selectively but in depth. The only minus are the reproductions, which are mediocre, a British editorial badly imitating the original Swiss version. Still, for a decent price, the entry into the Renaissance cannot be easily beaten!
