Janice P. Nimura: Stand in the Place Where They Were (0 comment)
I’ve always loved historic house museums, loved peering beyond the velvet rope into a Victorian bedroom or a colonial kitchen and imagining the ghosts that wore those dresses, or worked the handle of that butter churn, or laid the fire in that grate...

About the Author

John Howard Griffin (1920-1980) is known internationally as the author of two novels, Nuni and The Devil Rides Outside, five books and monographs on racism in addition to Black Like Me, a biography of Thomas Merton, three collections of photography, a volume of journals, two historical works on Texas, a musicological study, and The John Howard Reader. Born in Dallas, Texas, and educated in France, he served in the U.S. Air Force in the South Pacific, where an injury he received during a Japanese bombardment eventually resulted in the complete loss of his sight. In the 1950's he converted to Catholicism, married, and raised a family. In 1957, (after ten years of blindness) he miraculously regained his sight.

I have gone on many trips outside of Hawaii, but I am still not aware of all the things going on in the places around me. After I finished reading Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin, I realized more, how differently black people are getting treated. It made me think about the way that I treat everybody, since everybody deserves to be treated equally. Every time I flip a page, the story Black Like Me by John H. Griffin comes to life right in front of my eyes. John Griffin makes a perfect illustration of what is happening throughout each part of the book. A little while ago, I was on a trip with my team and we took a trip to a place I was unfamiliar with. I feel that I can really connect with how John Griffin feels when he is in a "new world" that's unfamiliar to him. "I knew now that there was no such thing as a disguised white man, when the black won't rub off (11). While reading this, I realized that no one knows how hard someone else's life is until they step into their shoes. After reading this book, I now know that I need to put myself into other people's shoes more often instead of complaining about everything. I always see people who complain about how hard something is even though they don't try to do it first, they complain first. John Griffin shows everybody how people don't know how others live until they have gone into "their world" or until they have been in the same situation. The more into the book that I got, the more I couldn't put it down. I stay up at night, no matter what time it was, just to finish a chapter or sometimes a couple chapters. Putting myself in someone else's shoes is what I always think about if I complain about something.
