Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

In the seemingly endless sea of "self-help" books, of which I usually try to avoid, this one charts a new course and raises the bar! I found myself reading and re-reading it all. It not only tackles broader issues related to BIPOC women recognizing their goals and value in the workplace, while navigating stumbling blocks, like racism, along the way, but it has messaging that is personable and inspiring. This is not a generic, one-size-fits-all personal growth type of read. Each chapter is unique, accessible, relatable while challenging the reader to raise and reach their own expectations. With clear and concise messaging, and deft writing skills, Gonzalez has put forth what should be a "must read" guide for all women of color in the workplace.

We are so fortunate that Linda Gonzalez took the time to collect and curate the wisdom from her decades-long coaching practice into this small and powerful volume. With clarity and precision, Gonzalez names the many challenges facing women and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) who live and work under the systemic oppression of racism, sexism, homophobia, capitalism and white supremacy. With great compassion, she invites and encourages women and BIPOC to live with purpose as they come to know and learn to break through their own glass ceilings. She emphasizes this is the “critical internal work to be able to challenge these external barriers.” “Breaking Through Your Own Glass Ceiling” is career guidance and self-care that acknowledges the limiting (and self-limiting) ideas and behaviors that are created and perpetuated by oppressive systems, structures and institutions. Linda Gonzalez’ uniquely valuable approach to embracing a full-hearted life is the hammer we need to break through.
