We used to live in a neighborhood called Bullet Park because of all the drive-bys (it was featured in "Colors"). This book is about a very different Bullet Park, an affluent suburb where the American Dream goes to flourish. . .or does it? Along with Yates and Updike, John "Wapshot" Cheever mapped about the discontents and despair of the middle class American male in the mid-century. His Wapshot books get more praise, but this, his third novel, is a more nuanced, poignant and incisive book. The tone and mood seem to be a big inspiration on the writers of "Mad Men."
