Rating based on the staying power of the novel, which I read around age 11, and reread several times in intervening years. Twenty years later, I feel it is branded in my psyche through profoundly dark yet marvelously unexpected plot turns. Often those few who know about it speak only to rail against its explicit nature and dark themes, but that is a shame, as the novel deserves discourse on a grander scale. The conclusion is one of my favorites in all literature, and I hope that it receives the regard it deserves someday. The strong female lead possibly changed my life for the better.
