I'm only a few dozen pages into this book, a so-called field guide (but really more of a textbook on PNW ecology!), and I've learned so much. The author takes a landscape scale view to explain the geology and weather patterns that create the ecosystems of today, then goes to a conifer needle scale to explain why certain plants grow in certain ways on certain sites. I'm not just getting facts from this guide, I'm getting understanding.
I also appreciate the honest though sobering assessments of the impact of climate change on future PNW ecology. There are no rose-colored glasses here. Knowing more about what we are learning encourages me to continue my actions to both reduce my impact and to help others recognize and act on theirs.
