Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

This long awaited Concrete5 guide book provides an in-depth walk-through of all the essentials you'll need to get up and running with a concrete5 website. It has loads of examples and useful code snippets for novice and intermediate concrete5 users, and also includes a few cool new tips and tricks that might even surprise concrete5 veterans. While the book's probably best suited for those who have a basic understanding of CSS, HTML, and PHP, it still has a lot of valuable information about operating a concrete5 website for those who are still learning these skills. Within concrete5, many common website problems have already been solved at the interface level, so it's good to see that it takes the time to explore both the operation of the CMS from an end user's point of view, and how to customize your site from the code level. It covers a surprisingly wide range of topics, including: how to get a site running on your local development environment; how to skin your site with your own custom themes; using, customizing, & creating blocks; developing your own packages; how the attribute system functions; how to use basic and advanced user & group permissions; single pages, page-types, views & controllers; and deploying/configuring your site in a production environment. The author of the book, Remo Laubacher, has been an active member of the concrete5 community since it first became open source, and his contributions have played a significant part in how the system has developed over the years. With this in mind I can say that few people are as qualified to write a book on the subject. Highly recommended!
