. . . Lawson has done a remarkable job in finding, organizing and especially annotating these items. Personal Names and Naming is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the names and the naming of people and the starting point for serious research in the field; it belongs in the libraries of all name scholars everywhere.Journal of the North Central Name Society

Lawson's new bibliography updates [Elsdon C. Smith's Personal Names: A Bibliography] and serves to group by subject important works published in ... periodicals, as well as many other books and journals.... The bibliography includes approximately 1,200 items, divided according to 48 subject categories, covering both family and given names. One section is divided by ethnic origin. Who can resist perusing these sections of the work, for example, `Graffiti and Names,' `Obscenity and Names,' `Identity, Self-Concept, and Names'? The bibliographic citations to books and journals are complete. The excellent short annotations promote interest in the subject. These annotations also provide the number of references included in the work cited. The author and subject indexes are accurate, and the contents pages serve to outline the sections. Highly recommended for public and academic libraries.Reference Books Bulletin
