Publisher Comments

A brilliantly plotted, relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller from the author of the bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy

"'Are you happy with your life?'
Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious.
Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.
Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, 'Welcome back, my friend.'"

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human—a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

Review

"Crouch keeps the pace swift and the twists exciting. Readers who liked his Wayward Pines trilogy will probably devour this speculative thriller in one sitting [as will] those who enjoy roller-coaster reads in the vein of Harlan Coben." Booklist

Review

"A mind-bending thriller of the first order, not merely a rollicking entertainment but a provocative investigation into the nature of second chances, all of it wrapped in a genius sci-fi package. I dare you to put it down, because I sure couldn’t." Justin Cronin, New York Times bestselling author of the Passage Trilogy.

Review

"Exceptional. An exciting, ingeniously plotted adventure about love, regret, and quantum superposition. It’s been a long time since a novel sucked me in and kept me turning pages the way this one did." Andy Weir, New York Times bestselling author of The Martian

Review

"Brilliant. A book to remember. I think Blake Crouch just invented something new." Lee Child, New York Times bestselling author of the Jack Reacher series

Review

"A dazzling book for summer [with] a mind-bending premise, a head-spinning plot that’s dialogue-driven and adrenaline-fueled, and a gut-wrenching climax that gave me goose bumps." Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Review

"A mind-blowing sci-fi/suspense/love-story mash-up." Entertainment Weekly

Blake Crouch on PowellsBooks.Blog

The hardest thing writers have to do is figure out for themselves who they are. What should they be writing about? What stories should they be telling? What does writing mean to them? I didn’t know the answers to those questions for a long, long time...

It's all plot with not much character development, but the plot is quite a doozy that makes you want to keep reading. Some of the science behind it made my head spin, especially the last act twist that I did not expect. Even after it was explained twice, I still didn't fully understand, but went with it anyway. The writing style is very similar to Chuck Palahniuk with very short sentences and paragraphs, but it does help with driving the story along. I loved the idea behind it, which reminded me of the show "Sliders" but then it went off in another direction. At the end of the second act, I was about to give up on it because it was becoming more and more depressing, but it finally gave way to the third act with a crazy twist. I would love to see this as a movie. I hear there is one being made and I think it would be so much fun to watch on the screen.

If your favorite books are those that you don’t want to put down, that keep you up at night, read DARK MATTER. Even if you are not normally a science fiction fan but do love thrillers, read DARK MATTER. This excellent novel presents happily married Jason who has a son and a job as a professor at a small college. He sometimes wonders what his life would have been like if he had taken a different path 15 years ago when he married his wife, Daniela. Don’t many of us wonder the same thing, how the road not taken might have changed things for us? Jason got an answer to that question. DARK MATTER is Stephen Kingish. Some of his books do not have monsters or clowns but are about normal people who find themselves in extraordinary circumstances. DARK MATTER is like those. Or maybe Crouch should not be compared to King. Crouch is not a new author. He wrote the WAYWARD PINES trilogy, the basis for the TV series of the same name. But I did not read it; Crouch was new to me, so I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked DARK MATTER. I won this book through librarything.com.
