As a teacher I spend my summers looking for books that my students will find engaging. This book kept me captive the entire time I was reading it. Barry Denenberg takes the historical accounts of what happened to the Jewish population in Vienna during WWII and how some were able to escape the terrors of what was happening. This is a well written book that will make my students want to know more, about the war, about the Jewish people and what they had to endure. I am eager to return to school to help strengthen their learning through literature.

I think the "Dear America" series is one of the best series I've ever discovered. In this book Julie Weiss has to leave Austria because she's Jewish. This book shows the horror and fear she has to live with before she's able to escape to New York. But the horror replays continually in her mind, even once Europe is behind her. Will she ever laugh again? She doesn't think it is possible after all she has seen.
