Jim Benbow is a law-abiding citizen; just an average joe, with faults and strengths just like everyone else--your typical Haycox hero. But he is a man strong and touch enough to mete out justice at the point of a gun if need be. And there was need....When a range detective turns up dead across the saddle of a horse, Jim Benbow knows he's got trouble, and he knows just where to look, Cash Gore. The problem was Jim's friend Clay Brand worked for Gore and it was likely Clay was involved in the cattle rustling; still, friend or not Jim had to do what he had to do. Typical "western" fare, yep; but done in the Haycox style, and that makes all the difference! No one writes a better story, with better characters, with more hidden intrigue than Ernest Haycox does. His writing is so far superior to most of the writers of his day, or any day for that matter, there is no comparison. Indeed, he raised the level of "westerns" to heights that even today authors try to reach, but no one has come near. I recommend this book.
