Synopses & Reviews
The purpose of this book is to guide you through each stage of making a book bound in leather, a 'fine binding': a book fully covered in leather, with leather-jointed endpapers, gilt edges and leather doublures.
It is designed to be used as you work, and is arranged as a numbered index of the processes involved: the sequence of operations. Once you have identified the stage you are at in the sequence, you simply turn to that number in the main text where you can read a rationale (why you do it), followed by the technique (how you do it).
Understanding your purpose and improving your skill will increase your confidence and enhance your making experience. Bookbinding - making books - is wonderful in its diversity. You are artist and engineer, designer and maker and, as with all arts, mastering your technique frees your intent. This book, by explaining why, and then how, aims to help you to achieve that.
