Great Bildungsroman story, that contained some precise details, which tells me it isn't too far from the truth! Original 20 something guy from the Pacific NW in the 80's, who is forced out of town because he doesn't want to work at Nordstrom's selling shoes, which is currently the best job he thinks he can get. I've visited Spokane during the World's Fair years ago and had to chuckle at his angle on the city, which he wants to conquer and prove that he is going to be the best/most fabulous guy to come out of their since Bing Crosby. Sad at times, because life can be, but nearly always hopeful and left me with a nice feeling at the end, which had a pretty crazy ending, but just what needed to happen. Fun read, with short chapters. I'm giving this to all my college nieces and nephews as a gift.

From the very first page of Don Jans' debut novel, I became Jack Fitzpatrick's biggest cheerleader. Even though I had my doubts that our narrator would succeed in finding fame and fortune in LA after leaving his Spokane, Washington roots, I was rooting for him the whole time! I was charmed by Jack's naivete' and eagerness and absolutely enchanted by his self-deprecating humor in the midst of his many, many bizarre encounters. I literally laughed out loud throughout the entirety of this witty journey into the world of temporary jobs, financial endeavors, and the uproarious, "freakish" characters that Jack meets along the way. Jans' use of the character of Mrs. Pohlkiss, his condescending and haughty neighbor, throughout the novel as an impetus for his determination to forge on in his pursuit of happiness is brilliant. Her eventual comeuppance and the absolute hilarity of the final pages at the end of the novel provide the reader with a profusion of humor mixed with a profound poignancy that we share with Jack as he realizes what is truly important in life. Fasten your seat belts, readers, as Jans takes you on a wildly humorous, bawdy, and boisterous ride through a young man's search for acceptance, for accreditation, and for the resolution that we all seek for ourselves.

Super fast hilarious read, read it from start to finish during one long Sunday afternoon. Laughed out loud several times in the coffee shop, which was a bit embarrassing. Rare for my attention to be kept for an entire book, but this one did it! The author's use of a hautey nouveau riche neighbor as his arch nemesis was brilliant! and something everyone has endured on some level. And I Even learned a few things about finance stuff. Great lean writing style, that I wish I saw more of.
