Could you describe your latest book, One Hundred Percent Me?
A little girl is used to hearing questions about her looks all the time. "Where are you from?" "What are you?" These questions are a constant reminder from others that she is different. As she embraces her identity and culture, she teaches others that she belongs, that the differences they notice are part of what make her unique, special, and herself....

Publisher Comments

From internationally acclaimed author Anne Enright comes a shattering novel set in a small town on Ireland's Atlantic coast. The Green Road is a tale of family and fracture, compassion and selfishness -- a book about the gaps in the human heart and how we strive to fill them.

Spanning thirty years, The Green Road tells the story of Rosaleen, matriarch of the Madigans, a family on the cusp of either coming together or falling irreparably apart. As they grow up, Rosaleen's four children leave the west of Ireland for lives they could have never imagined in Dublin, New York, and Mali, West Africa. In her early old age their difficult, wonderful mother announces that she's decided to sell the house and divide the proceeds. Her adult children come back for a last Christmas, with the feeling that their childhoods are being erased, their personal history bought and sold.

A profoundly moving work about a family's desperate attempt to recover the relationships they've lost and forge the ones they never had, The Green Road is Enright's most mature, accomplished, and unforgettable novel to date.

Review

"A rich, capacious story, buoyed by tender humor....The Green Road...offers a survey of Enright's magnificent dexterity....There's nothing she can't do with perspective, tone and time." Ron Charles, Washington Post

Review

"Hugely readable....The Green Road should confirm Enright's status as one of our greatest living novelists." John Sutherland, The Times (UK)

Review

"This novel is a vibrant family portrait, both pitiless and compassionate, witty and stark, of simple people living quiet lives of anguish, sometimes redeemed by moments of grace." Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

Another winning novel from the prize-winning Irish author Anne Enright. "The Green Road" was awarded the Man Booker Prize for 2015 and tells the saga of the Madigan family from Co. Clare. Rosaleen is the matriarch who takes to her bed in the "horizontal solution" in a crisis. Over the years, the four siblings try unsuccessfully to please her. When Rosaleen announces her plans to sell the family home, the brothers and sisters decide to come together as a family to celebrate one last Christmas together in their home. Vivid writing--a funny and sad book that is richly deserving of the awards garnered.

While the story here is nothing new, Anne Enright tells it well: the matriarch of an Irish family has her children back for one last Christmas dinner before the family home is put on the market. The Madigan children are all ambitious, independent adults who have spent the better part of their adult lives trying to distance themselves from their mother (and each other), but upon returning home find they have much more in common than they ever thought. Enright pays careful attention to moment of quiet calm, and is able to imbue a somewhat predictable premise with grace and ingenuity. A lovely, simple read.
