Synopsis
This edited volume aims to facilitate the evolution of the new public health approach towards gambling. Bringing together the work of international experts, it gives a current overview of the field, highlighting the need for a co-ordinated framework of prevention and harm reduction measures, in place of isolated "player protection" measures, and the need to underpin this by public policy.
Chapters begin with a consideration of the impact of gambling dependence and recent work looking at its effects on many levels, including for the individual, family and society. Once the scene is set, an overview of potential prevention and harm reduction models is presented, which brings the reader to consider the possible components of a public health approach for the field. Later chapters focus on potential challenges to monitoring and evaluation, which invite the reader to envisage possible barriers towards implementation and useful approaches towards these. The book concludes with potential recommendations to take forward the harm reduction approach, from a political and human rights perspective.
This work gives a rare synopsis of the present-day issues related to harm reduction for gambling. Recent work by key professionals is presented, to encourage further developments in the domain, as it continues to evolve. Such issues will be of interest to those concerned by gambling dependence including political actors, professionals and students of the field.
