If you have children in your life, choose this story. You'll find yourself remembering and sharing your own outdoor experiences as you read. The book is as warm as homemade berry pie. The saddle is Saddle Mountain, and the story immerses the reader in Oregon's unique outdoor life, but without horses. You'll join the characters on a long hike as they learn about forests and wildflowers, about life and friendship. Bright watercolor illustrations set a friendly tone.

In _High on the Saddle_, Shumaker does an excellent job of capturing key elements of this wet and wonderful landscape and the essence of a grand parent - grand child relationship and shares both in a way that is engaging and compelling for young readers - and us older folks who read to them! I highly recommend it.

My nine year old daughter loves this book. She likes that the book has lots of humor in it. After reading it, she wants to do the hike up Saddle Mountain with her own Nana.
