Synopsis
Scholars nowadays regard nations as changeable constructs in the force-field of politics and culture, and therefore also of literature, and the beginnings of German national consciousness are now dated later than was the case for a long time hitherto. The new insights have far-reaching consequences and are highly relevant today. This is the starting point for the present monograph, which enquires into the literary construction of (pre-)national identity from the perspective of German Studies and subjects current modes of interpretation to critical scrutiny.

Nationen gelten heute als Konstrukte im Spannungsfeld von Politik und Kultur und damit auch von Literatur. Parallel dazu hat sich in der interdisziplinar-mediavistischen Nationenforschung ein tief greifender Paradigmenwandel vollzogen, der unter anderem zu einer weit spateren Datierung der Anfange deutschen Nationsbewusstseins gefuhrt hat als lange ublich. Beide Entwicklungen fordern in neuer Weise auch die Literaturwissenschaften zu kritischer Reflexion. Die Monographie setzt hier an, indem sie erstmals systematisch aus germanistisch-mediavistischer Perspektive nach Genese und Modus narrativer Konstruktion (vor-)nationaler Identitat in der deutschsprachigen Literatur des Mittelalters fragt und zugleich aktuelle Entwicklungen der historischen Linguistik mitberucksichtigt. Dadurch geraten gangige Interpretationsmuster so bekannter Texte wie des 'Annoliedes' und der 'Kaiserchronik' auf den Prufstand, und sukzessive weitet sich der Blick auf verschiedene Reprasentanten so unterschiedlicher (differenzierungsbedurftiger) Gattungen wie mittelhochdeutscher Chanson-de-geste-Adaptation, deutscher Heldenepik oder spatmittelalterlicher (Reim-)Chronistik. Dabei zeichnen sich Konsequenzen ab, die auch die Humanismusforschung betreffen.

The series "QUELLEN UND FORSCHUNGEN ZUR LITERATUR- UND KULTURGESCHICHTE" (Sources and Research in the History of Literature and Culture), with a rich tradition stretching back to 1874, is an established feature among the renowned publications for German Literary Studies. Edited by Mark-Georg Dehrmann and Christiane Witth ft, the series presents examples of high-quality scholarship examining literary texts in conjunction with historical cultural phenomena, particularly with the other arts. There is an explicit demand for literary studies with a transdisciplinary approach. German literature from the Middle Ages to the present day forms the main focus of the series.
As the historical cultural thrust of the series includes aspects of intercultural experience and national perceptions of the other, Quellen und Forschungen is also open to occasional comparative studies. The publications of the series include monographs, doctoral and professorial theses. Works presented for acceptance in the series are required to display scholarly relevance and excellence in method and presentation.
