Chapters 1 and 2 contain the information necessary for an understanding of how medical terms are formed. In Chapter 1, you will learn about word parts, combining forms, prefixes, and suffixes, and general rules for building medical terms. You will also learn about terminology for medical records, managed care, and the different health care settings. Before the end-of-chapter activities begin, you will encounter the first of many new features in the text. "Professional Profile" boxes highlight different health professions and are intended to increase your knowledge of careers in the health care field. In Chapter 2, you will learn about terminology relating to the body structure, including organs and body systems. Here you will see another new feature, "Word Building" tables, which list medical terms and their respective word parts. Throughout each chapter are several "Med Term Tips" which are intended to stimulate your interest by describing quick facts about medical terms.
ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY CHAPTERS
Chapters 3-13 are organized by body system. Each chapter begins with an overview of the organs in the system and is followed by lists of combining forms, prefixes, and/or suffixes with their meanings. Chapters are divided into the various components of the system, and each subsection begins with a list of key medical terms. Key terms are boldfaced and pronounced the first time they appear in the narrative. Following the anatomy and physiology section is a word building table, as well as medical terms with pronunciations. For ease of learning, the medical terms are divided into four separate sections: vocabulary, pathology, diagnostic procedures, and treatment procedures. Abbreviations and a list of key terms follow in the end-of-chapter material. For easy reference, there is a combination glossary and index at the end of the text with pronunciations and definitions of all of the terms in the text.
PHARMACOLOGY CHAPTER
Chapter 14 is a new chapter devoted to pharmacology. You will learn how different drugs are classified and how to administer drugs safely and effectively.
