Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different, and that he was different from them.  While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an outself.

He grew up in the rambling old house, filled with dozens of cousins, and aunts and uncles, all ruled by his father.  Their home was isolated in the mountains of western Virginia, far from town, far from schools, far from other people.

There are many secrets in the House, and many rules that Danny must follow.   There is a secret library  with only a few dozen books, and none of them in English — but Danny and his cousins are expected to become fluent in the language of the books.  While Dannys cousins are free to create magic whenever they like, they must never do it where outsiders might see.

Unfortunately, there are some secrets kept from Danny  as well.  And that will lead to disaster for the North family.

Review

"Card's latest novel demonstrates his ability to create youthful protagonists whose coming-of-age resonates with depth and meaning even as they become the fulcrum of events on a grand scale." Library Journal

Synopsis

The New York Times-bestselling creator of Ender Wiggin returns with a brand-new hero in a brilliant new urban fantasy series about a clan of mages in exile in our world, living in uneasy truce with other clans until Dan North's birth brings the flames of open war back to life.

Synopsis

Danny North grew up in a family of gods - the poor remnants of the mages who once went by names like Odin, Thor, and Freya.  When the gates that led to their home world of Westil were closed by Loki in 632 a.d., they lost much of their power.  When Danny realizes that he is a gatemage, he has to flee the family compound in western Virginia and make his own way in the world, at least until he learns how to control his gift and reopen a gate between the worlds. Not only does he face the ordinary dangers of a teenager trying to survive on his own in America, and the mages who would kill him if they realized what he was, but also, if he ever succeeds in opening a gate to Westil, he can expect to be stripped of all his power by the Gate Thief, who seems determined to keep all gates closed.

Loved this book!! I loved the parallelism of modern day with Norse mythology. Great plot with suspense and great descriptions. Looking forward to the sequel!
