Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Coming from a man that climbs the worlds highest and most dangerous mountains for a living, Viesturs manages to come off as a likable average Joe. His ego comes across at times, but being he has been on the summit of Everest more times than most people leave their home country he deserves some slack. Ed talks about a fairly normal upbringing, getting into college to get a job to make enough money to be able to do what he loves, in this case climbing. He talks about living in a windowless basement and eating ramen barely scraping by, but keeping his eye on the prize. He talks fondly of all his friends and family, and takes climbing mountains very seriously. His motto stuck with me; "Getting to the top is optional, getting home is mandatory." This is a very inspiring book that has a little bit of everything, whether you enjoy climbing mountains or not.
