"And it was from Boston that one in every six American families began their journey into the land of the free." --Mayor Thomas Menino INTROIT I: Ode to Boston ODE to my lady Charm of the first colonies... Blue-haired with emeralds. Hail, greatest gal on-the-globe! Hail, HUB of the universe! Fabric for Sox fans: Yards for Union cornered sails... Great Spirit of teas! Hail to you my sweet goddess... American Athena!" --John Ross, Jr. (2011) ODE TO BOSTON NEIGHBORHHODS is a bright new collection of tanka or Japanese `short-poems' commending Boston, Massachusetts. In this new volume, John Ross, Jr. has written sixty tanka-cantos which highlight some of the city's most beloved historical and modern landmarks. From Charlestown and Beacon Hill to Somerville and Brookline, Ross features twelve of his favorite Boston area neighborhoods. By choosing a precise five-line contemporary American approach, governed by a strict 5-7-5-7-7 syllabic pattern, he has created `short-song-poems' which are colorful bold images governed by emotional restraint and economy of language; ones which seem to evoke a sense of lyrical and colonial celebration toward his overall subject matter. Although each previous line may provide a distinctive image or idea, the concluding two stanzas (each, precisely seven syllables) organically resolve by flowing together as a larger unbroken 'musical' sequence; one whose theme is grounded in the celebration of Boston geography, culture and American colonial history. This annotated volume includes an explanatory PREFACE on "'Tanka' as a form of 'Waka' or Japanese song verses", and a FOREWORD entitled: "The Ode as a form of tribute" along with a detailed commentary guide in the back entitled: "NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES" highlighting twelve of Boston's most popular neighborhoods for those visiting this grand historical city for the very first time. This collection is a must for all those who dearly love Boston, a city famously dubbed by Oliver Wendell Holmes as: "...the Hub of the solar system!"
