Janice P. Nimura: Stand in the Place Where They Were (0 comment)
I’ve always loved historic house museums, loved peering beyond the velvet rope into a Victorian bedroom or a colonial kitchen and imagining the ghosts that wore those dresses, or worked the handle of that butter churn, or laid the fire in that grate...

Ernest Gaines 's novel Of Love and Dust belong to one of the mervillious afro-american book I have ever read. The whole novel talk about things we African people have experienced during the colonization . Of course the context in the novel is quite different to what African people had faced and to what Black people in America had experienced ....but in terms of the victim of injustice , segregation, exploitation and misery one can see a link between this two people who of course live miles away but have at a certain degree a linked past...The idea of keeping the past at bay plays an important part on the novel (mainly with characters like Bishop and Marguarette who in a certain way are proud of the past of their ancestors but also they don't want at any moment to lose all the priviledge they have thanks to this system)this may explain at a certain point of view why they hate Marcus the one black man who dared and wanted to collapse this social and economic stratification . The social determinism make the characters not being free agents but people pawn in a mechanistic world order ...
