Review

"A tour de force of research and synthesis, richer than any extant King biography or civil rights history, this will be the measure of all books to come." Library Journal

Review

"Already, in this chronicle, there is the material of Iliad after Iliad....There is no time in our history of which we can be more proud." Garry Wills, The New York Review of Books

Review

"In remarkable, meticulous detail, Branch provides us with the most complex and unsentimental version of Kning and his times yet produced." Robert C. Maynard, The Washington Post Book World

Review

"Monumental....[A]n overwhelming new perspective." Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, The New York Times

Review

"This work is least successful when it attempts to be more than a history of the movement....Mr. Branch's burden — to cover, and bring together the scattered impressions that convey a movement — is awesome enough. Adding to the mix the nuances of the nation's history proved impossible." Eleanor Holmes Norton, The New York Times Book Review

Growing up in a predominantly white community, I cannot say that I completely understood the Civil Rights movement until I read this book - the 1st in the Taylor Branch trilogy about the Martin Luther King years and civil rights activism. Although I was repulsed with so many of the accounts I read, I was intrigued and amazed by the courage and endurance of the individuals and groups of people who were willing to sacrifice everything for the right to be recognized as equal - something taken, so often, for granted. Yet this occured in our lifetime. An incredible read.
